Default Fuel Valve, Carb, neither or both?

'Splain this, Lucy: Getting ready to park, I shut off the fuel valve, let it run until it quits, and in a few minutes I have a gas drip on the bottom of the carb which continues. Overnight it might drip a a quarter of a cup. If I just turn off the switch and leave the gas valve "on" everything stays dry as can be. No drip. If things were the other way around, I could understand it but as it is, it's a "puzzlement'. Ideas please? Do I need to think gas valve, needle valve or something else? Gas valve is about 34 yrs old carb is only about 2.

A leaky shut off valve in combination with a sticky float hinge that if it reaches the bottom of its travel is reluctant to move up?? But if the float is staying in the down position , where's the petrol leaking from? maybe the fuel rises ( but not enough to jerk the float into action) to a leaky jet gasket and flows out form there?

Your shut off valve is not sealing. Its an easy fix or replace.

With the valve open there is enough pressure from the gas to seat the valve in the carb. With only a drip from fuel shutoff the drip can travel past the valve seat in the carb and out the car.

Look on the seating surface of the float. It is possibly deformed where it contacts the valve.
