Front motor mount question.
Simple question. Is the motor mount in the picture below installed correctly? Or is it backward? Hope it is backward because if it is, that will solve some of my problems getting this engine installed.

The bolt on the bottom of the motor mount is tight against the front of the hole in the front cross member. Thus can't get the brass (?) washer in the hole where it is suppose to fit. That is why I thought I may have it in backwards. It would seem like if I turned it around, it would fit better.

Not the greatest picture (mine) but this is what I have and it seems to line up ok and appears to be the same orientation/assembly as yours.

Fred, It's tough to tell from the angle of the photo but it appears the engine may be slightly too far forward. Is it possible to get the fan belt on and off the pulley? As a point of reference think about '28 models with the solid front mount. The rear flange of the front cross member is taller and the engine bolts directly to it. Similarly, the rear flange of your cross member should align vertically with the mounting surface for the motor mount. If it DOES align properly then the motor mount is bent. Also be sure the front of the engine isn't too high as that will make a slight difference.
The brass bushing was only used for 3-4 months and was then changed to a steel flat washer.

Yes Paul, this is the rig that I changed out the front cross member. After getting the old one out I tried to compare them (the old one was messed up) and they looked the same. I also replaced the rear motor mounts with a set that were not cracked. Don't know if I somehow messed up putting in the rear motor mounts. But the way they go in, don't know how I could have messed up the rear ones.
Marco, thanks for the tips. I will have to check your ideas out. There has to be something I did wrong or something wrong with the parts. In my limited experience with Model A's, things seem to fit a lot better than they have so far on this rig. So another question Marco-you mentioned they changed to a flat washer. If I can't get this brass bushing to fit in the hole, could I just slap on the flat washer and have it work out OK? Thanks guys for the help.

What year Model A is this in? Weren't the brass washers eliminated sometime during production having just a plain washer at the bottom?

It is a 1929 STD coupe. According to what Marco said above, the washer was eliminated after about 3-4 months.
Marco, after I tighten the front motor mount nut underneath so that I can get the crank in, the motor still seems to be about 1/8 of an inch to far forward based on what you mentioned above. I can get the fan belt in by twisting it "vertical". After getting the car on the road for awhile, do you think the engine will "shift" back to where it should be? Will it hurt anything leaving it the way it is? (1/8 inch to far forward) Thanks again guys for your comments.

Fred, the flat washer just straddles the hole with no step as the brass bushing had and allows the stud to float in the hole. The stepped bushing just wears the hole larger in the crossmember. Does the yoke have the correct offset? Some repro yokes weren't made correctly.

On my early '29, the yoke seems to have less off-set to the front than yours. Looks like, maybe 7/16' to 1/2," Bill W.

The motor is bolted to the rear motor mounts but the rear motor mounts have the bolts through the frame loose.
I am not sure where I got the yoke that I am trying to use. I do have 2 other ones that I may try and compare them to the one I am using. I don't think it is the yoke because the engine sits to far front, about 1/8 inch past the edge of the rear of the front motor mount. This would seem like the rear motor mounts are pushing the engine forward and causing this problem. Could I have the rear motor mounts installed wrong?? Will have to check things out. Sometime next week, when I get a few other pojects finished, looks like I need to do some more checking as to what is going on with this situation. Thanks again for your ideas. Will keep you all posted if you are interested.

Is this a different engine than what was in there before you repl'd front c/member?? Did you have the tranny out?? Is the U-joint installed correctly and do the clamshells bolt up??

Paul, all good questions. It is a different engine. I installed the "new" engine with it's tranny installed on it. I did not change anything on the U-Joint and I need to check out the clamshells. The bolts on them are tight but I need to take a closer look at them. I had a problem getting the bolts installed that bolted the engine to the rear motor mounts. I had to loosen the bolts that bolted the rear motor mounts to the frame to get these engine bolts in. Also had to push the rear motor mounts forward to get them to align with the engine bolt holes.

How about if you loosen the rear moynts and see if you can get the engine to "move" to the rear what you need and THEN tighten your mounts??

I have repositioned the motor with a large pry bar and a block of wood between the motor and the front crossbar to get it to fit. Bob
