Small Fire Extinguisher to Carry in Car
What would you recommend for a small (1-2 pound) fire extinguisher to carry in the car that would not make a terrible mess after using. I have been in the hobby for 56 years and feel negligent for never having one ready to use! Thank you, Ed

Re: Small Fire Extinguisher to Carry in Car
I believe I have a Ha-Guard unit. Had it quite a while so should look at replacing it.

Re: Small Fire Extinguisher to Carry in Car
A great topic. As a business owner I am frequently asked to make donations to car shows for the prize table. For the last 3-4 years I have been buying automotive fire extinguishers from Napa, Harbor Freight and Walmart. For $100 I can usually buy 3 good quality extinguishers. On tables where winners pick prizes they are usually first to go. I always insist that that the winners are picked by ticket number and not best in the show.

Re: Small Fire Extinguisher to Carry in Car
Guten Abend Ed,
the best thing without consequential damage are CO2 extinguishers

Re: Small Fire Extinguisher to Carry in Car
I just carry a run of the mill ABC dry chemical extinguisher (a mess is better than a burnt down car) but if you're shopping for a good one Halon is the way to go if you can get it still.

Re: Small Fire Extinguisher to Carry in Car
IMO get an ABC. The greatest threat is a fire involving fuel and oils. In most cases the small ones aren’t enough with an engine/fuel fire.
If you carry the power extinguisher in your car 1x/yr turn it upside down and smack the bottom with a rubber mallet to “fluff” the packed powder. Your local fire extinguisher company may offer training.

Re: Small Fire Extinguisher to Carry in Car
I'm not sure you can even get real Halon anymore, can you? It damages the ozone layer. All the new extinguishers are 'Halotron 1'

Re: Small Fire Extinguisher to Carry in Car
Saw this on a Jay Leno program, seems to work? My thought would be how close to the fire do you have to be. No mess. I have not used this or seen it operate in person.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBjXecsF860 Having the extinguisher in the trunk is a great idea for safety, most likely the fire would be at the engine compartmaen area, going to the back of the car puts you in a safer area and you may decide not to fight the fire when you look to the front of the car. Remember the gas tank location and those little leaks! A little off subject home smoke detectors.... make sure yours is working! They do save lives! Keep your home extinguisher at a door to the outside, when you get the extinguisher you are at an exit, when you look back at the fire it may just be safer to exit the building. |

Re: Small Fire Extinguisher to Carry in Car
That Jay Leno one is called Firestryker here in OZ and sold by ARB.
https://4x4.firestryker.com.au/about-firestryker/ I bought one recently. The reason is that the last car fire I was involved with, transmission oil on the manifold, we had to call up cars with extinguishers on the radio. It was only a small fire, but it took three of those small extinguishers to put it out. This one is small and light and, I gather, does the work of about 6 extinguishers. However, using one is not intuitive. Be sure to read the instructions until you know exactly what you have to do. I've cut out the instructions on the box to keep with it. |

Re: Small Fire Extinguisher to Carry in Car
The only good ones are banned because they kill dolphins or something.
I can't even find CO2 ones anymore. Probably banned for being carbon emitters. CO2 were great for welding jobs, as they didn't run out after opening, just use as much as you need & save the rest for later. So.. CO2 if you can?

Re: Small Fire Extinguisher to Carry in Car
I guess the 'halotron' are the expensive ones. I see Cal. Car cover sells a specialty extinguisher for about $100, I think this may be it. They are supposed to be non corrosive and not damage wiring, car parts etc. However, if your car is on fire theres a great chance its either fuel related or wiring related and at that point who cares how it gets put out! I carry a smallish ABC job in my car, cost was less than $50. I also carry them in my work trucks (as per dot). The ones on my trucks are strapped outside the driver door on the tool box for all to see and easy access. I am a bit negligent as the one in my car is in the back seat foot well (modernish car compared to an 'A'). On my to do list is to screw the mounting bracket to the floor on the center hump within easy reach of the driver seat. Being loose in the car is dangerous as it can become a projectile in case of accident. AACA requires them for their shows, but most of the local places and cruise nights I go to never mention them. I am of the thought that they should be mandatory. People will spend upteen thousands of dollars on a car/restoration then neglect $50 for fire protection. Last summer an acquaintance of mine was driving his pristine '62 Impala home from a show, smoke started coming out of the hood right in the middle of main street. He stopped the car, popped the hood to see it engulfed in flames, the fire extinguisher in his hand save the car from catastrophy.
2018-06-20_04-30-17 by Kerry Grubb, on Flickr Speaking from experience no amount of fire protection is too much. I keep several placed around my garages now! |

Re: Small Fire Extinguisher to Carry in Car
I have this old 'Fire-Stop' fire extinguisher in my car for display only. They supposedly worked good in the day putting out fires but the chemical they used was said to also kill the fire fighter...

Re: Small Fire Extinguisher to Carry in Car
Hallo und guten Nachmittag.
This is my liquid CO2 extinguisher with a snow funnel. CO2 leaves no harmful residues.
