'32 "NOS" running boards on eBay

Anyone tempted to bid on the "NOS" '32 running boards listed today on eBay may wish to look very closely at the photos provided. There's no rubber on either end and the bottom edge of the rubber does not wrap around the edge of the steel foundation. Also the pattern of the pyramids at the ends is messy. Lastly, there's no evidence of the little holes in the bottom of the steel bases with their little blisters of rubber formed during vulcanization.

Draw your own conclusions, but in my opinion they look like Rosemead covers from yesteryear on old reproduction steel bases.

He's quite the seller David, he also has a '32 closed car dash that has one bid at $125. The top of the '32 pickup, not passenger, dash is cut off and it was replaced with the dash rail from a '28-'29 Fordor.

I appreciate posts like this. I'm not a '32 guy but in general, posts from well respected folks (in this case, Dave) go a long way to help others that may otherwise be misled.

Many of the EBAY sellers of vintage Ford parts don't have a clue of what they are selling and its true condition.2 wks ago on a buy it now I bought a set of 36 dlx gauges.Pics didn't look to bad.The description was only that it was a used set of 35-36 gauges.I asked the seller to call me which he did.He said that they are "really nice".I asked him to test the temp unit.It did not work.How about the speedo.Oh needle bounces when I shake it.He brought the price down by a third.After receiving them one bezel had a non repairable dent and all faces were heavily nicotine stained.Luckily I could return them which I did. Word to the wise.If pics are deceiving ask lots of questions.

Thanks as well David and value your knowledge on all things 32. I also spend way too much time on eBay looking at parts and like previous comments, am amazed at the bs some sellers put in their ads, as well as having no clue what they are selling. Also using 1932 Ford as a catch all in their title or description is annoying, when the item is for something totally off topic.

David has quite the sharp eye when it comes to 1932 parts. I think some sellers can easily get NOS and Old Replacement mixed up. I will admit I have goofed up in that sense as well.

There was a 32 radiator shell emblem that sold a couple of days ago that looked repo to me. It was listed as ginnie and sold for $400. I would love to get Davids take.

like hb32 said, its more than annoying that every car part ever made is for a 32-34 ford. a search for 34 brings up 13,000 items! click on "used parts", brings it down to about 1000, of which, really about 200 really are 34 parts. 32 is even worse!!!

When in doubt, list it as a '32 part, as some seem to think.

I have almost entirely stopped looking for parts on eBay, as there seems to be nothing left, and if you do find something, it usually has problems like those being discussed here. I'm lucky I'm old and don't need too much anymore. It got progressively harder to "separate the fly shit from the pepper".

That $400 radiator shell emblem looked to me to be the real deal. There were several suppliers of these and this one is consistent with the relieved back version, including the details of the script and the color of the cloisonne.

The most annoying is the wide spread habit of saying any part fits a "32 ford". can't use the search function at all. Seems like the latest trend is "I am not an expert, look at photos and judge for yourself" from sellers with 100's of car parts for sale.

I have not looked at the runningboards in question and am not a 32 expert of any sort. I am however a seller on ebay and when the opportunity arrives to buy a large lot of parts for a good price and make a profit I do so. This comes with risk and often the task of figuring out what the parts fit. I do my best to represent the parts as they are. I also get annoyed at sellers that put unrelated catch words in their listings as it drives potential buyers away from parts that are represented as they are. Thankfully there are people on the forum that point these sellers out. I also wish there were people who would point out the good sellers parts. Rod

I buy a fair amount of things on eBay and in my experience, 99% of the sellers there are straight shooters and I always try and reflect the good experiences through positive feedback. Notwithstanding, caveat emptor (let the buyer beware) are words to live by. To me, that means that I have a responsibility to do my own homework and not rely solely on the knowledge and veracity of the seller.

It helps some if you use the "exclude words" box which is right below the "key words" box. Currently I exclude" -fits -plaque -radiator -magazine -photo -hot -kit -walmart -kit -fiberglass -franklin -louvered -diecast -die -pewter -collectible -scale -amt -matchbox -dropped -illustration -keychain -ertl -bank -rod -mustang -escort -econoline -print -quartz -hotwheels -model -chevy -sbc -danbury". Unfortunately I am at the maximum of the words I can exclude.

Watch the number of "hits" go down as you add words.

Rowdy, I bought a "NOS" 32 Ford rear axle shaft ebay # 172090023701 from 40Fordor. Turns out the axle was not usable, threads would not hold the nut. Called the seller, he issued a full refund while I was on the phone and paid for the return shipping when he received the axle. Just a waste of time, no ill feelings. Just wish the "friend" who sold me 32 front end with a slightly bent wish bone and slightly bent axle would step up to the plate. What are "friends" for???

My Ebay searches for "32 Ford" have produced some really amusing results over the years. Here are some examples:

Who else watched them? $815 and the seller had added alittle to fhe description but in a way to not admit they were not NOS but just to try and protect themselves. Their actual knowledge of what they are selling is limited . They got some junk 39 standard front fenders listed as 39 deluxe and all 40 fords.

What a ripoff! That's about what the Bob Drake boards sell for and those are very good reproductions without the flaws of those so-called "NOS" boards.

Recently bought a NOS door latch for my 39 PU. When it arrived, it was so rusted that I had to soak it in ATM & acetone for 2 days to get it to work. I see a locking spare tire hubcap on ebay now. If you look close you c an see a hole drilled through the stainless steel and the clips that hold the lock door closed are missing. Seller admits that the lock is missing. This is wall art only and could not be repaired with out another hubcap to rob parts from.

How can you sell something as NOS if it is rusty? I guess, if it had never been installed or used and sat out on your back porch for 60 years it could qualify.

After 80+ years some rust is commonplace on new parts that old unless boxed and having spent their time in a dry environment. If you hold out for parts that are perfect in all respects it can be a long wait.

An uncle of mine bought a defunct Ford agency years ago. The machine tools and newer parts sold, but the NOS Model T fenders didn't and went with the building. Due to the leaky roof, they were rusty. This sale was in the 60s, I saw the fenders in the attic of the building in the 80s.

I personally think the buyer is the decision maker on whether they believe a part is NOS on eBay. Some sellers truly don't know any better. However if they are informed otherwise they should make it clear. I imagine (know) this seller was informed they were not NOS. Best to buy from a seller that accepts returns just in case.
