Default MERC to FORD ring and pinion-Fit?

Hi fellas,
Im looking to put a 3.78 or 3.54 in my 38 pickup. I have the chance to buy a ring and pinion out of a 48 Mercury . Just wondering if they will fit in the early banjo and if the axle tooth pattern is the same. I know axle length is different.
Any thoughts?
thanks

I believe you will find that the Merc has a one piece driveshaft and pinion combined unlike the ford with a sleave on the pinion and driveshaft,.

I think the one piece shaft and pinion is only in the early (39?)Mercury.If you only use the ring and pinion and or banjo you should be able to use your carrier and spiders which will be compatible with your axles.Geoff

Somewhere in that time frame, the rear axle pinion changed over to the 6-spline from the early 10-spline and the spider gears & axles changed tooth count. If the 38 has a 6-spline pinion then the ring & pinion should interchange. If it is 10-spline, you will have to adapt.

OK thanks
I haven't yet seen this complete rear end that is on offer but will of course pull it apart to check. Just didn't want to go to all the trouble of dismantling if it was miles out of fit. Definitely worth checking out though.
