Default Anti Chatter rods

We have a pair of the anti-chatter rods here that I cannot identify. They measure 15-1/8" tip to tip. The Ford parts books shows the 40-6044 rods (for 1933-34) and the 48-6044 (for 1935-40). I know that the 41A rods are over 23" long. Can anyone give me the lengths for the earlier types.....or just confirm which ones are the 15" long types? Thanks!

Remember in 41 Ford came out with 4 cyl pickups and 6 cyl cars. 32s have a plate on the rear that has 2 bolt holes where it bolts the K member. Also were a few 33s that had 4 cyl engines too.

Mac, the steady rods from my 1937 85 hp car are 15 1/8" in overall length. Attached is a picture showing the tape measure lined up with the center of the mounting hole. By the parts book these should be part number 48-6044.

'33-'34 V8 rods are 14 3/4" long and un-treaded on center cross member end.

There were three different versions of the '32 V8 rods and two of the four-cylinder rods with the major difference being whether they passed through the center cross member or not (the initial V8 and B rods did not pass through, but rather attached to the front of the cross member).

Along this thread, can someone explain what I should do for anti chatter rods when installing my ‘49 Merc engine in my early model B frame. Thanks.

You don't need them if everything is new and tight.

Okay, but why were they installed originally when everything was “new and tight”?

Good question, to which I have heard many answers over the years.
Maybe it was cheaper than replacing worn motor mounts and bad clutches.
They sure increased felt vibration.

Fortunateson,

I'd start with a pair of B rods as they are longer than the '32 V8 rods giving you more to work with to modify them at their front ends to line up with your Merc engine. (They also generally cost lots less than the '32 V8 rods and seem to have a higher survival rate.)

For '49-'53 engines, Mark Seitz makes these brackets and ships to you. His correct phone number is 234-600-8804 and he charges $60 which includes shipping for a pair of his brackets. Coop

His address is the same:

5345 Parkman Road NW,

Warren,OH 44481

With respect, those would be kind of worthless in a '32 chassis given how the rods attach to the flat side-to-side center cross member and not to the legs of an X member as shown in your photo such as in a post-'32 chassis frame.

David ....And with respect for what you're saying, we really don't have any idea how this poster has mounted the rear of his '49 Merc engine/trans in his "early Model 'B' frame". My reply was actually geared toward those folks seeking a method to attach the rods to a post-1948 engine. Coop

Okay it’s time to educate me yet again...
‘49 Merc , ‘39 trans, early ‘32 frame. I haven’t started assembly yet just been working on preliminary engine and trans work.

I thought these rods were basically a length of round stock threaded on one end, engine end, and a flat round disc at the other end that prevents it from pulling through the K member.

Do I have it right? Can these be easily fabbed?

Flat round disc? Sounds like you think that they slide back and forth rather than are firmly attached to the center cross member. Early '32 frame? That covers a fair amount of ground as there were three different 'early' center cross members, each with its own unique steady rod attachments, two of which are incompatible with the spacing of the rods on a '49-'53 engine. Nothing to it, however, right? (Incomplete questions get you incomplete answers every time.)

Well I’m knew to ‘32s and included all the info I have at hand except for the fact that by early I mean that the frame has no reinforcement where it arches over the rear axle and that it’s a Model B frame. That’s all that I know...trying to be as “complete” as I could. Perhaps you could let me know how I’m to determine anything more? Now as to my misunderstanding as to what a anti-chatter rod looks like maybe you could educate me with a pic or to..nothing to it, right?
