Default Rear main seal question

I have an 81A block. From what I’ve seen, the correct rear main seal halves are 78-6335 and 78-6336. I attempted to install the upper, 6335, and noticed it seemed a little too big. I tried a rubber mallet to seat and, surprise surprise, it split in two. Do I have the wrong part? Is there a technique for installing it?

I had an idea that maybe someone can chime in on. I was thinking that maybe I need to start with the seal clocked one direction with the majority of the seal in the groove, then use a rubber mallet to rotate the seal into its finished position. Any thoughts?

Yes, the ‘labyrinth’ style with no rope. One half goes in the block, the other in the oil pan. No rope

On the 81A block, one seal fits in the block and the other in the rear main cap not the pan

Oh, ok. Correct about the rear cap, but how about the method for installing? Any advice?

They just slip in they only go one way. Another question is 21 head studs or 24?
