46 ford pickup
hi, im 14 and me and my dad just bought a 46 ford pickup. the engine turns over but does not start. we got some spark out of the coil, and we checked one of the spark plugs and got spark out of that two. Any suggestions on what to do to clean the engine up a bit?

Re: 46 ford pickup
Hi' I was 15 when i got my 1st F-1 and now i'm 51. Its nice to see kids your age getting involved with old cars and trucks. Check all your grounds really good. Check the carb to make sure that your getting gas. Take a wire brush and a putty knife to scrape all the crud off. Use aluminum foil to mask things off for your detailing. Good Luck

Re: 46 ford pickup
I too have had my 46 half ton since I was 14 , I am now 55, it has been sitting in the garage since it was recovered from being stolen and stripped back in 1988, I managed to recover most of the parts and hopefully I can get started re restoring it this summer, I have since retired due to med. reasons so Ill have plenty of time to do it again, as for your no start problem, first off check compression add a little MMO. to the cylinders and recheck the timing and fuel delivery, I had the same problem when I tried to get my 46 going for the first time and wound up hooking up and pull starting it, glad to se some youngins carrying on as we need to keep automotive history alive!
Good luck! D.R.Estes |

Re: 46 ford pickup
The 6 volt Fords are in fact positive ground. The grounds are a great place to start cleaning, faulty grounds are the biggest deterrent to these Fords starting correctly, good grounds and a fully charged battery are the best palce to start. Do things one at a time from there, plugs, points, whatever and hopefully you will hear that sound of a flathead running.

Re: 46 ford pickup
congrats on you and your Dad's buy....6V battery hooked up so positive goes to ground?? clean all your battery wire connections so you have clean ground, etc....are they new battery wires??....6V requires heavier wires than 12V so you need 0, or 00 wire such as you get at welding shops to get the best out of your battery....when was last time engine was run??....might need to file the points a little to get the best from them, too....good luck and don't be shy about asking questions...someone here will be able to answer correctly....i hope...lol....Mike

Re: 46 ford pickup
After sitting a long time the fuel pump can be hard to prime. I had to take mine off this spring and operate it by hand with the outlet line in a pop bottle to get it pumping. Look at gas cap fo a clear vent, if not and a vacum is created it won't work, my vent plugged did not figure it out until I cranked it with the cap off, started pumping.
