Default My 40 ford Jumping out of high gear

I have been driving my car for over 10 years with no problems. Today it started jumping out of high gear into neutral. Does this call for a readjustment of the shifting linkage and if so some advice please.
Thanks
Warren

It could be adjustment. What I would do is put it in third gear and then raise it up into the air. Then pull the linkage on the second/third gear lever, now see if you can move the lever farther into gear. If it isn't the linkage, it could be either the shifting fork or a gear.

When it is popping out of gear, that is usually an indicator that it isn't going all the way into gear.

High gear depends on the synchronizer assembly since it is direct drive. When things get worn and there is too much play in there, it can pop out. It is important to maintain the detents in the shifting mechanism though. They do some of the job of keeping things in mesh. It may be time for an overhaul.

Today I extended the shifting rod another 1/4 inch for third and second gear. Then drove it up and down hills, braking a lot and in start and stop traffic in town. So far it has not disengaged again. Got my fingers crossed and knocking on wood.Hope this will solve my problem.
Thanks again to you both

check the condition of the rubber grommets. worn or loose (oil soaked) grommets will contribute to the problem. glad you do not apparently need to rebuild trans!!
