Default 47 ford door panels

The inner surface of the my door panels over the years have been damaged by moisture or water. The cardboard backing has become soft in places. It looks if shellac or some kind of sealer was put on to protect them but it didn't. I have a new set to install. What do you do use to protect the panels. I was thinking of a thick vapor barrier like they use on newer cars. Also over time the holes for the clips become damaged. I have a trim tool but is there a better way to re & re. Thanks

I used a sheet of plastic attached on using duct tape on my interior panels to keep water and moister away.

I used 1/8" masonite and painted it both sides. They have been on the car for about 18 years and no damage. I had second thoughts with a plastic vapor barrier because of the moisture that will migrate into the door, past the glass, in the rain. I figured any ventilation I can get has to help keep things dry. Newer cars use plastic but they're really sealed well
