I think its incumbent on me as your brother A'er that I should stop you before you get hurt too badly. You should dump her while you have the chance and let me take her far away from you so's you don't get hurt again :-) |

Thats awful nice of you Pat, you are not the first kind hearted person who has offered to put me out of my misery. I guess I'm addicted to abuse so I will have to pass on your kind offer for now.

Re: Follow up on poss blown head gasket.
No it hasn't. It still is not as peppy as I think it should be. I will make sure the head gasket holds together for a bit then start diggin into the power issue.

Re: Follow up on poss blown head gasket.
Please, ....PLEASE find a Leak Down Tester and someone who is proficient at using it. Then please report the findings.

Re: Follow up on poss blown head gasket.
Got a harbour freight leak down tester today. Will try to figure it out this weekend. Hopefully I can get more power out of this engine. Brent I may call you. I did get it all back together and washed up. She looks pretty good!

Re: Follow up on poss blown head gasket.
McClab,
Provided your timing's right on, try this: Run 20 to 25 MPH in 2nd gear, with engine warmed up. Hold the speed steady, & adjust the GAV for maximum power & speed. Then, just leave it set there, except maybe for a cold morning start & a quick drive away. Chief taught me, "Don't ALWAYS be DIDDLIN' with the GAV, it ain't NO play toy. It's jist for when you need it, like, the thing's real cold, or in the mountains, or at different elevations. It's jist an added high speed jet, whin the regular high speed jet won't "CUT IT"!!! WELL, thet's whut he tole me!! Bill W. There are SO many misconceptions about the GAV, like, they affect the idle, WRONG!! if it affects your idle, then your basic idle speed is TOO FAST!!!!!!! Some folks seem to "over-complicate" these old carbuerators, GEEZ! They're SO SIMPLE. Cleaned well, float level correct, throttle shaft rebushed, (if needed), jets of the proper size, you're off & running.

Re: Follow up on poss blown head gasket.
1. last time valve lash was checked was how many miles ago......
2. You are proficient at setting timing we presume......

McClab
concerning your low power problem, you might check for a plugged muffler or tail pipe (mouse nest) especially if car has been stored for a extended period. John |

Re: Follow up on poss blown head gasket.
Have only had the car 3 mos, this is the first bump in the road with it. I have set the timing but haven't done much else.

Re: Follow up on poss blown head gasket.
I don't recall if your lack of power is something new or if it has been this way since you got it. Tom Wesenberg mentioned the possibility of the timing gear being off a tooth. My 68B ran like it had the brakes dragging, and did not develop snappy power. I finally deduced, after checking every thing out over and over, that this could be one of those timing gears with the indent in the wrong place (or not lined up with the crank gear). The gear was knocking so needed attention anyway. Sure enough it was one of those timing gears with the indent in the wrong place, off by a tooth. I replaced the timing gear with a standard size aluminum gear as the crank gear looked pretty new, so I assumed they would mesh well. (Nearly impossible to check backlash once the engine is assembled, unless someone can tell me how) Well the power increase was incredibly dramatic. There is a bit of noise however coming from the gear, so I will ultimately bite the bullet and get a matched set from Dan McEachen. There was an original tool made for removing the crank gear (KRW?), and reinstalling it. It is a crank sort of setup and the neatest thing-wish I had one. A fellow in the Rocky Mountain Model A's has one and changed the crank gear in my 30 Coupe with the engine in the car. No heat, no press, no problem. Anyone else seen this tool? Anyway, back on topic, if you still have the lack of power issue maybe this is something to look into.

Re: Follow up on poss blown head gasket.
Ok, went down to the local oil change place owned by a buddy, drained the crank case of the oil and water mixture. Refilled it and drove about 10 miles, drained again and it's lookin btr. I had them pump 3 quarts into it again with the drain plug out to splash whatever was in the dipper tray out . Replaced the plug and filled it again. I will probably change it 1 more time next week. As for the power/speed issue, it appears the throttle rod is about an inch short. The engine is not getting full throttle. Will have to go dig thru my spares and see if a have a longer rod.

Re: Follow up on poss blown head gasket.
i probably wouldn't have driven or started it at all without draining it first
I had one so bad i filled it with ATF as its a better detergent ran it in the bay then drained it and did a few oil changes. |

Re: Follow up on poss blown head gasket.
First check the throttle arm on the carburetor and especially the lever on the foot accelerator to see if they are bent incorrectly. Often times this is the case.

Re: Follow up on poss blown head gasket.
Mitch, I had already drained it once prior to today's oil
changes. |
