A bit off topic but relevant nonetheless. AnthonyG may know the correct answer to this being he studied metallurgy at Temple. I have been admonished several times on using the term "angle iron" by structural engineers. It was pointed out to me that though it is in fact angled it is not iron but steel. There is a difference as steel is an alloy. Perhaps a clarification is in order? Recently, and I don't recall which member has been a self-appointed hairsplitter regarding these sorts of things. LOL. This post is intended to be in good humor regarding proper terminology. For those who do wood work is it a lag bolt or a lag screw? If it's a lag bolt then why is it shaped like a screw and why is a machine screw shaped like a bolt? Just wondering.

there is "formed" angle iron, as in formed in a brake, nice round edge, and regular angle iron, square corner, not sure how its made, but thats enough for me

It's kind of like, is it an engine or is it a motor? I was told at one time that an engine was either steam or combustion powered and a motor was electric. Then again, I can't say that I ever heard of a Harley Davidson "engine cycle".

The term “lag bolt” is indeed a misnomer. It is a “lag screw”, both names refer to the same connector. I’ll go you one more… you referenced “wood work” which more commonly would refer to the finishing of furniture or cabinetry, as opposed to carpentry, for which lag screws are in frequent use. As for iron and steel, I suppose a housewife with a steam iron could be called an iron worker, while a steel worker builds skyscrapers? … And then there are motorboats powered by flathead V8s!

'Angle iron' is like 'cinder blocks'. Just terms left over from an earlier age by old guys that won't change. In the 70's I worked in Southwest Harbor Maine, and the guys called the brick thing sticking out of the roof a 'chimbley' and the gas pedal was always an 'exhilerator'. Oh and a pair of channelocks was a pair of 'waterpump pliers'. I still miss those guys.
