Default New Rear Hub Question

Bought new rear hubs about 4 yrs ago. Just getting to the point where I'll be installing them on my 6 yr old project. I noticed there are no grooves for the retaining rings (c type clip) in either hub. Maybe they decided the clips aren't needed. Any thoughts?

I am not sure what retaining rings you are talking about. There isn't even a hint in your profile. What year car are you working on and where do the rings go?

That would be for a '40 rear end. From memory, the clip went outside the grease seal and wheel bearing.

Are you referring to the large C-clips that goes in the rear hub to hold the bearing in place? I would think that those hubs would be grooved for a C-clip. Post photos if possible.

Great. The bearing slides in followed by the grease seal and then the C-clip. Otherwise, there's nothing holding it all together.

do you have the seals? I just did mine, and the C-clips seemed redundant as the seal was a press fit into the hubs. my seals came from Mac's.

Not necessary, the hub is retained upon the axle shaft and there is no lateral movement, so the retainer clip is not necessary. The compression of the seal retainer is sufficient to hold everything in place. Just a note: If you purchase the replacement hubs they take the earlier B- seal rather than the later 78-seal.

Gentleman, Thanks for posting those replies to the original question. I always thought the C-clip was needed. Learned something new. So when the seal is installed it is tapped down inside the hub until it rests on the shoulder, correct?
