Default Stromber 97

I have had it with carbs that leak and I'm thinking of either putting on a 4 bbl Holley or staying with the 97 theme by using the 9Super7 carb. What I would like to know is if there is any feedback on the 9Super7 carb? Are they any good?

Have the 97 rebuilt by Max Musgrove. He refaces the flat surfaces so there are no leaks.

Chris, I ran a pair of old chromed 97's on my flathead for 15 years. Never a leak . Only once did something get past my filter and cause my needle valve to stick and flood out. I had these carbs rebuilt by Vintage Speed. Charlie has fixtures to mill all gasket surfaces flat again, uses the proper torque on all screws, and uses more modern parts in the rebuild. There are others who do the same. I struggled rebuilding those old Holleys for years, could never quite get them right. Guess I should have had them done professionally. Rich

Google "9Super7 carb" for much information. Why spend that kind of money when you can send your Stromberg 97s to Max Musgrave for a complete rebuild by the expert for a third the cost, and keep the original? They will not leak and run as they were supposed to.

That is good information. I had not thought about having them rebuilt. They were originally built by Charlie Price of Vintage Speed in Florida. I have left a message for Max to call me. I would like to see what new 97's cost and what rebuilding them so they don't leak costs. Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

Try Daytona float valves. They never leak and flow more than stock.

Pete, that's an interesting device which I hadn't seen before. The Viton needle on my 97 kept sticking and I replaced it with a steel needle; so far so good for several thousand miles. Do you have personal experience with the Daytona float valve? Longevity?

Rebuilt Max 97's or New genuine Stromberg 97's also from Max if my memory is right. Those 9super7's are cheap copies, made for profit over quality. The opposite of what the genuine New or rebuilt Max carbs.
If your feed up with leaks, where do you think your money is best spent?

I have been using Daytona float valves since the mid 50's.
Another company developed them back then. I don't rermember when Daytona got them.
They normally outlast the mechanical parts of the carb.

I have used Daytona carb kits for years. Excellent parts and service. As for rebuilding a 97, Max is number one.

Chris,
Where is your 97 leaking ? Per chance if the source of the leak/s are at
the 3 plugs under the chin of the bowl I have found in many many cases the nylon
gaskets I use/make will prevent this condition. I've tried cast nylon gaskets but
they seem to be too smooth and too hard. What has worked well for me is to
machine the gaskets from 1/2 dia common nylon round stock. The tooling 'grooves'
on the front and back of the gasket gives the it just enough compression to 'seat'
between the bowl and the plug.

Get Uncle Max to rebuild those 97's, and have him install his hex-head jet plugs so they can be tightened with a small wrench instead of a screwdriver. Much better in sealing.

I recommend the OP read up on Charlie Price either here on Fordbarn or over on the HAMB. Lots has been said about his work and business practice. You will find it very interesting reading.

Both Charlie Schwendler and Max do excellent rebuild work, and you will be happy with either one. I understand that Charlie does some of Max's carb machine work for him.
