Default Another Rear Axle Question

Has anyone ever used these tapered axle shims? Is it common for the hubs to bottom out on the axle housing before the tapers seats? I'm trying to lap the hubs and axles on a '40 and can't get a total lap between them. Sounds like rubbing between hub and housing. Thanks.

Tony, Yes, they are used when needed. If you can't get a good lap though, I'm not sure they would help, but what the hey, try lapping with one in place and see how it works. Can't go wrong if you don't let the shim overlap itself? I'd definitely snug the axle nut up to where the shim wouldn't shift cockeyed, just loose enough to allow the drum to turn. No, wait: The keyway will scuff up the edges of the shim, no good. Hmm... lap without the backing plate?

there where shims on my model A when the hub got loose they would tighten up the nut. the last time I tightened it up I pulled the threads off the axle. then I had to replace the axles. when I was cleaning the axle housings I found pieces of axle shims in side. they are a Band-Aid for a big problem. you will end up fixing it later
