Re: 39 deluxe - 40 deluxe
I agree with the creator of this thread and always wondered why a 1940 was the car to have, but a 39 was never mentioned. When I started looking for a Sedan , I started looking at 40 Sedans because it was the car to have. Then I opened my eyes and started thinking for myself and ignored the hype. I decided on my very own that I liked a 39 Deluxe better. The Floor shift, opening windshield, no wind wing to be in the way, tear drop tail lights, extremely good looking front end, wide 5 wheels, Banjo Steering wheel and the dash . We all have our likes and dislikes which is a great thing, but I think the 40 Ford is talked about enough that people just say they want a 40, not knowing the differences. Don't get me wrong, all the old Ford a wonderful cars. If somebody parked a 40 in my garage and said it yours, I would kick her out

Re: 39 deluxe - 40 deluxe
I had a beautiful '40 deluxe coupe In the 90s. Now I have a '39 deluxe coupe ( my avatar) and a 39 standard coupe. I like them all. But my dream car is a 39 convertible.

Re: 39 deluxe - 40 deluxe
I've had both, and now have a '38.
I prefer having wind wings, for all practical reasons. For most other reasons, I prefer the '39 for a mix of practical and aesthetic reasons. I prefer my '38 for its superior braking system. Surprised? The '39 - '48 hydraulic brakes left a lot to be desired. Nuff said.

In my opinion 1940 Fords, like 1957 Chevrolet's have obtained somewhat of a cult status. I won't argue why this is so or even if it makes any sense, but that is the reality. Most car collectors have long ago accepted this as fact.

I was never a fan of the drooped hood front on the 38 deluxe and the 39 standards. I love the 38 standards and the 39 deluxe, but also the 40 standard. |

Re: 39 deluxe - 40 deluxe
But Falfa eventually lost to a "piss yellow Deuce coupe"!
While I currently have 4 40s now, I have owned 16 55 brand x cars over the years but only have 1 now (a convertible), never a 57. Truthfully--I'd rather work on a brand x then the old Fords, seems easier to me but I love them both. |

I have a 39 Deluxe tudor which I think is a classic beauty. I love everything about it except the headlights, which are really lousy.

I agree. The 55 Chev is so clean in styling to look at, the whole car & i love that egg box grill. The 57 is too busy for my likes. I like the 40 Deluxe because we didn't get them here in NZ as we were already in WWII then. The 39 Deluxe in cpe form is really something though. GB

Re: 39 deluxe - 40 deluxe
I thought I was the only person in the world who didn't like 57 Chevys. Turns out there are a lot of guys like me who like 39s better than 40s. As for Chevs, I like the 55s best. My first driver was a 56. Didn't they go to the 283 in 57? Maybe that is part of the reason for their popularity.

Re: 39 deluxe - 40 deluxe
I couldn't agree more! All those things mentioned seem like extras that got taken away when the forty came out.

In 57 I knew a man that factory ordered a 57 convertible, 283 with fuel injection and 4 speed manual. All these options were new in 57 if you could afford them. I always wondered what that car would be worth today? I probably couldn't afford it anyway!!!

Re: 39 deluxe - 40 deluxe
V8Coopman-- Now that I have a 32 5w of my own (not yellow) I need a Milner T-shirt!
Sorry I contributed to the hijack of this thread! To me, I don't like the 39 dash so the 40 wins in my mind. Would I rather have a 39 convertible then my 40 convertible--yeah. It is pretty close, they are both great cars. |

Re: 39 deluxe - 40 deluxe
Yup I,v also had both here over the pond , ,I had a 40 convertible for near on 30 years, that is now in the south of France,i,v had my 39 coupe 28 years ,just finished a loooong restoration on it (27 years), for me I prefer the looks of a coupe over a convertible and over here the amount of times over the year you can drop the hood and enjoy sunshine is not very often,i also prefer the 39 look , grill ,steering wheel .lights ,dash although I prefer a column change ,both great cars but over them all my 37 Lincoln Zephyr coupe is "the one ". on a separate thread I have a question on my 39. thanks .

Re: 39 deluxe - 40 deluxe
The old car market has made it clear that the '40 Deluxe commands more money, all other things being equal. I have a lovely '40 V8 5W coupe but must build it as a Deluxe against my own preferences, dictated by the parts left from other projects. Would gladly trade for an equally fine hood, grille, and trim pieces. Good Luck: Fred A
