Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
Can someone help me identify these two chrome wiper motors? I think they are for an early 1930s Ford open model car. They are identical in photo but one has broken off mounting ears. Thanks..........40larry

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
As noted above on Ebay- Ron Monte is the go to guy for these hard to find (rare?) NOS wipers. Interesting guy, knows lots of stuff. I got my 32 wiper from him.

Are 32,33,and 34 roadster wiper motors all the same? If not, can someone post the differences? Thanks

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
The '32's have 2 tiny screws that secure the rear cover to the case. The 33-34 snap on and that cover is about 1/2 the thickness.I have some spare rear covers in both styles if anyone needs one.

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
Hey Gang . . . anybody know if Roy Monte is still in business and how to contact him? Also, has anybody worked with rebuilds from Rob Ficken (as I see him on eBay quite a bit).
I have a really nice 35-36 chrome heart-shaped wiper motor (with the speed control) - want to see if I can work a deal with somebody to get a late 32 - 34 chromes open car unit with an adjustable speed control. Thanks! |

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
Late '32 wiper motors had snap on covers like the '33-'34s. The change took place concurrent with the change in wiper blades and wiper arms (in how they attached to one another).

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
The two above, while for Model As, are post-late '32 service replacements as the originals has screwed on covers.

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
Hey Gang - does anybody have any perspective on the value of a really nice 35-36 adjustable speed heart-shaped unit (open car) - versus a late 32 - 34 adjustable speed open car unit?
I'm not up on these units, availability, pricing, etc. - just need a really nice one for my 34 roadster. Thanks! |

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
There were no chrome speed controls on the 32-34 roadster wiper motors.

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
Not an accessory in those yrs I noted. They never had one.Closed cars yes in '33.Here is a pic of the 35-35 roadster/phaeton one.It would be interesting to see a chrome speed control fitted to the '34 roadster wiper motor.Might look fine.
Here is one(33-34 roadster) listed on EBAY now. https://www.ebay.com/itm/164878167720 Last edited by deuce lover; 09-23-2021 at 11:43 AM. |

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
If memory serves me right, one of the pre-'35 Ford of Canada Service Bulletins has an exploded view of a pre-'35 phaeton/roadster wiper motor with a speed control of the same kind of control associated with the '35s and '36s. My copies of those Service Bulletins are inaccessible at the present time, unfortunately.

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
It's not completely out of the realm of possibility given that the '33-'34 closed cars had that feature

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
I need some opinions here - as I'm not up on these early V8 wiper motors.
Attached is a picture of one that is claimed to be NOS (that is for sale) - to me it looks like it was re-chromed? I see chrome on the inlet tube, I see what looks like new chrome on the top-screws and the plating appears to be on top of pitting that is in the base material. I also see what appears to be a chip in the front part of the casting. I'd like some opinions from those who actually have these units in a car or have seen them in detail - want to have a clue before I head down the potential purchase path. Many thanks! wiper-motor.jpg |

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
To give you an opinion on whether the motor in the photo in #26 has been re-plated, I would need to see a photo of the front and back. They don't re-plate readily and the warts tend to show up on the and back, not on the bottom.

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
Here is what I have - when you look at the details, the screws, the inlet tubes, etc. - very different finish than the 'NOS' one. While I need one, I'm not sure the one being offered is really what it is claimed to be - and the price is not on the low side:

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
Per David G: Here are some pics - from the unit on eBay (which I believe is the same one - as I was conversing with Roy). He's a nice guy on the phone (no hard feelings toward him), but I'm not drinking the NOS CoolAid. I'm surely not an expert - any many of you know more than I on this subject.

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
Update: The vendor acknowledged that it is a "re-chromed NOS piece" . . . was originally represented as "mint NOS". Personally, I don't believe it was NOS to begin with - but who knows. At least he acknowledged what I was seeing - which is a lot better than sticking to how it was originally represented.
Help Needed: Anybody have a really nice 33-34 roadster unit . . . and just maybe you're in need of my 35-36 (shown above)??? |

Re: Open car chrome plated trico wiper motor
Thanks for the additional photos as they are informative. Having had a fair number of the '32-'34 open car wiper motors, my conclusion is that it was re-plated as the vendor has now admitted. But it is too good to be a re-plate of a used motor. My guess is that it was a NOS standard open car motor which was originally painted black. They seem to be less prone to blistering of the zinc die casting and even used ones tend to turn out better than re-plating those that were originally plated.
I might have an extra standard (painted) motor if you're interested and you could get it plated or leave it black depending on what is your intended use. I'll check later this evening. |
