Default Ford-O-Matic questions.

Hi gang I am working on an "off topic" '55 T-bird 292 engine and Ford-O-Matic trans that came to me in boxes. I'm pretty comfortable with the engine but the trans or specifically the torque converter is spurring some questions in my mind.

The air cooled converter was disassembled. My first question is, is there a balance issue when I bolt the flywheel/ cover to the aluminum converter housing? There are weights and drillings on the flywheel but I see no obvious balance weighting on the aluminum converter housing.

Secondly is there a gasket or sealer used between these two pieces?

Third, I am guessing I should use Type "F" trans fluid in this baby. Is that correct?

Thanks in advance gang and any help is appreciated.

No balance issue on the cover. Some had a little roll pin to index the cover. A large square cut o-ring is used to seal it and yes on the type F unless it has been overhauled with modern clutches, then you can use type A or Dextron.

The Classic Thunderbird Club International has a lot of information about the small & medium case transmissions in there restoration manual. This includes upgrading to the later types if a person wants to go that route (Some of them will bolt right in). Auto Tran and several other outfits have some of the harder to find soft parts. It is getting more difficult all the time to find the hard parts but they are still out there for now.
