Default induction gauge/meter

After installing new wiring harnesses on the 48 the battery gauge/meter quit working. I read on another thread the same thing happening to MS Precher on his pickup truck. I have not seen another post from him whether or not he got it working.

Would the new wire being better insulated than the old cloth covered wire have anything to do with this?

Also would this other type of gauge work. The back is different where the wire passes through.

Wire covering shouldn't make a difference. It would have to be shielded wire to block the electrical field. What size (gauge) wire are you using? Are you sure you have the correct wire running through the meter? Where does the wire start and where does it end?

It should be wired like this.

That is the way it is wired. The new wiring harness is 14 gauge I believe. The diagram, color coding and written instruction from Sacramento Vintage Ford are very good. On this harness there is really no other wire that would work in this position.

14g would be way to small. This wire would carry all of the current going to the car circuits. It should be 10g. Something doesn't sound correct.

My error, it isn't 14 gauge. It is much heavier, I don't know what gauge it is. It is yellow as the wiring diagram shows and is wired just as your diagram is.

Just a guess, the volt gauge and amp gauge are interchanged?

This is the original gauge that shows charge or discharge. There is no other gauge or nothing interchanged.

Well, there are only two real options here, wire incorrectly or meter not working. A clamp on ammeter (multimeter type) would verify the wiring. Not sure of a good way to check the indash ammeter short of trying it in another car. Is everything else in the wiring working ok?

Yes everything else worked. I have yet to bring power to the heater. Also trying to figure out old turn signal wiring and power source. Have not reinstalled radio as yet either. I don't know if it didn't work because of cobbled wiring or if it is needing work itself.

The reason I asked about the gauge in the picture is because it is available but I don't know if I need another or if something else is wrong.

Can you see the colors? This is one I drew up in the past, but the colors can vary. Also posted some other examples. Note: I removed two of them, they were the wrong wire count.

If you can locate the brake switch wire and the blinker canister wires the rest are fairly easy to sort out.
