i've got a '29 a, with the button, rod, pawl, spring and pin missing. and i have a '31 aa, e brake complete.
i see the length is different as well as the pivot, i have not removed any internals from the '31 and don't plan to.
i can not tell for sure if the later will drop into where the earlier was on the transmission tower.
pivoting may be an issue and length may cause it to hit the dash. what else ?

If I remember correctly, they should be the same. I know the 32-up handles are longer and not straight at the top.

Nope, completely different. 29 handle goes in front of the shift tower, 31 handle is to the side.

31 handle on a 39 transmission but the location is the same

29 with 31 part to the left

Read your question wrong, I was assuming you had the late 29 handle to the side yes, the middle 29 was push button to the front, totally different.
