Question Front Crankshaft Oil Seal

Have to replace front front crankshaft & timing gear cover oil seal - has anyone tried the Aluminum with inner seal type (not cheap) , does it work? Or am I best to stay with the old rope type ? If the rope type do I soak it in oil or not? Many opinions about this - confusing. Hope you can help. John - Australia

I use the rope seal only, and I do not soak mine, i install using a socket about the same diameter tap the seal in place, even on both ends, and i put some stp on it once installed for lubrication.

I use the rope and don't have a problem with them leaking. Don't cut/shorten it. I soak them in oil and roll them in position with a socket or hammer handle. A dab of sealant where they meet the gasket doesn't hurt.

I also use the rope seal. I use to soak them but the last few that I have used recommended not to soak. I did oil them up and they work as well as ever.

All the above. The rope just works so well, I have never been able to convince myself to try the modern seal. Many years experience with early V8s, and they are basically the same as the "A".

It is important for either seal that the surface on the pulley that the seal rubs on is smooth

With the rope seal, if needed only the upper or lower half can be replaced. With the modern seal, the oil pan, timing cover and crankshaft pulley will have to be removed every time that the seal is replaced. The crankshaft pulley is what the seal rides on and needs to be perfectly round and smooth or the seal will soon fail. A lot of the new crankshaft pulleys are not smooth enough and most used pulleys will show wear where the rope seal makes contact

A lot of good advice here, I would also stay with the rope seal.
