Default Good Run

Yesterday my friend and I took our Model A's out for a 30 mile ride to enjoy bagels and coffee with a group of car guys. My friend drove his 1931 Town Sedan and I dove my 1931 Victoria.
On a level stretch of road, my friend gave his Model A full throttle, and the car was all out at 62 mph. I stayed with him, but I had more throttle left. Except for some modern driver's cutting us off, the drive in our A's was a good run.

I remember years ago in a 1930 Town Sedan on I-84 in Connecticut going up a long hill coming back from a New England Meet, having the accelerator all the way on the floor doing 50 mph and that motor sounded just wonderful. The car was loaded with wife and kids and clothes. It was back in the days when the speed limit was 55 mph and you could just about keep up with traffic. Ed

I have a "friend" who drives a 1929 Chrysler 65 which he has running pretty well. One day about 18 months ago, we were travelling back on a freeway from a car show. He has always scorned any Model A but when he was sitting at 100 kph (62mph), I came up behind him and pulled out to overtake. Wouldn't you know it, a modern car driver balked me. The same thing happened on my second move.
His attitude has changed somewhat since but I still haven't told him that the linkages for the throttle weren't right and I wasn't getting full opening. I don't think I'll do that again but it was FUN.

The look on modern car driver's faces when I pass them in my Model "A" is funny. Typically they are astonished. This does not happen often, but it adds to the joy of driving a Model "A" when it does.

Hi Ho Model "A"!

I'm waiting until a good rain washes the salt off the roads before I take my A out.

Hi Ho Model "A"!
Im finding that especially at car shows the attention is for the 60-70 era cars! The Model A group gets smaller and smaller because of lack of attention they receive! Believe it or not some people drive these cars for the attention they receive rather than for their own personal enjoyment!

I do not show my Model A's because I cannot sit still for several hours at a show, it bothers me that I have to pay to exhibit my cars, and I have zero ambition to have any trophies. However, I attend cruise-ins.

Agree 100% Bob. I also enjoy just driving my A down the backroads of Texas. So much is missed at 70MPH.

I agree totally with leisure rides. 70 MPH might be for others but not me.

It may just be a matter of perception. Dont get me wrong I love Model As (heck I dont own one -yet- and this is one of my favorite forums). I have a 'modern car' 60-70s era and when I am at a show or cruise they def dominate these days but it seems to me that the pre war cars garner as much or more attention. I for one would not trade my 70's car for one but def. want to add one to my 'stable'.

Bob B., I feel the same way, could honestly care less about a trophy, in fact I may have won many (doubt it) but I always leave early so I wouldnt know if I did! I enjoy all old cars, enjoy driving mine and going to shows fills that need. I dont mind paying as long as its a half way decent cause.

GOOD RUN WITH THE A. MUST HAVE BEEN A BLAST!!

To many of us, trophies are a thing of the past. When I see a car with a running board full of trophies, I laugh! Anyone can buy trophies at a trophy store. When my company donates to an event it’s never a trophy but always something useful like a fire extinguisher! Wayne

Are any of you folks running thermostats in your A's especially with high speed runs?

Assuming your speedos are calibrated correctly.....

I'd be more impressed with with the length of the skid marks to stop at 60.....
