Default Steering help!!!

Bought a '46 Mercury coupe and can't turn this thing around in a 10 acre field. Steering only has 2 1/2 turns lock to lock. Is there any way to adjust this? I think it should be somewhere near 4 1/2 turns if I remember correctly. Thanks.

Can you jack up the front wheels and check what is stopping the spindles at the end of their travel?

Thanks JSerry. I did jack it up, but couldn't find anything causing the stop. Seems to be in the steering box. Is there an adjustment in the box anywhere? Had it up on the lift, was going to disconnect the linkage from the pitman arm to see how many turns in the box, but the hydraulic ram on the lift sprung a leak and sprayed hydraulic fluid all over the garage. Cleaning up the mess became more of a priority than the steering box at this point.

To bad about the hydraulic fluid! The spindles should stop against a large extended nut on the axle. If not, like you said something else much be holding it up.

See if any of this VanPelt information helps: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...tmt1937-48.htm

2 1/2 turns is what you should have from centered to lock.
You should have 5 turns lock to lock.
There isn't any way to adjust it but you can back off on the adjustment screw to see if there is any undue binding.

Right on target JSeery! This car has disc brakes on the front and the caliper bracket was stopping against the spindle stop nut. Took the nut off and now the car steers like it should. Thanks for your help.
