Default 1929 water pump packing nut

I am trying to remove the packing nut from the water pump.
I have a pump wrench and have been turning it CCW for some time now and I cannot see that it is coming off.
Are the threads internal?

Could it be loose but stuck on the shaft?
The shaft does not turn with the nut.

And ideas appreciated,

Ken/Sc

The bushing must be loose and spinning in the pump body. If you have not already removed the pump from the head, that will be the next step. Remove the shaft and impeller and try tapping on the bushing from the back and see if it will hold while you finish unscrewing the packing nut. Sounds like its time to rebuild the pump with new parts. I suggest installing a leakless water pump kit

Sounds like you just need to put a little more umph into sliding the nut forward. Sometimes the crud build up on the shaft will prevent the nut from sliding forward.

Can you push the shaft backwards and get say, locking pliers on the thrust face at the rear? That might allow you to get the nut moving.
That said, it sounds as though the pump needs a rebuild. The kits are cheap and I wouldn't think twice about cutting the shaft or splitting the nut so long as you don't damage the cast housing.

Ken -
You probably have it unscrewed all the way and it's just not sliding on the pump shaft. Polish up the shaft and give it some ooomph.

I got the pump out of the car. The bushing turns with the packing nut. In a pinch as my daughter gets married first of September using the car, so I think I will just order a new pump and rebuild this one later. Thanks.

Just a word about rebuilding water pumps. I purchased one of the leakless water pump bushings from Bratton's. It is a press fit into the water pump housing. However the new bushing was slightly larger than the old one and consequently I cracked 2 housings before I got wise and honed the next housing slightly. Then it seemed that the new shaft was binding on the front roller bearing. It turned out that by rotating the bearing sleeve the binding was eliminated. 3 weeks and 3 waterpump housing later.

I know that most of us love to keep our Model A's as original as possible; however, I drive my 31' A regularly. I through finally replaced the original water pump with a modern 'Leakless pump several years ago. Very happy to not have to deal with 'packing and lug tightening. Still, it is your decision as to how original you want your Model A treasure to be. There is NO wrong decision, do what YOU want.
