need Hood shelve replacement
I started preparing the hood shelves from my 29 tudor for repainting. Much like the rest of the car once I started sanding I found evidence of a fast cheap repair, (picture) plus the screw holes are awfully ragged. I know finding original ones would be best, but in case I can't find any, has anyone had any experience with the repop ones. How good/bad are they?
Thanks in advance for your help! |

Re: need Hood shelve replacement
The only time I dealt with a repro was on a 1929 Special Coupe the body shop painted for a customer. I don't recall them having any issues, but I was mainly there to install the engine and get it running.
Am I seeing a cloth and fiberglass repair on the underside of your hood shelf? |

Re: need Hood shelve replacement
the reproductions are not as nice as the originals, and the curves are not exact, and the metal seems thinner. Once installed, most people would not know the difference. Have you called Bert's to see if they have any good originals?

Re: need Hood shelve replacement
I found that the repros needed quit a bit of trimming, the edge that faces the fender was too high and I cut it down till the wood blocks were slightly visible. I also had to cut some metal off of the front of it where it covers the frame horn. I used a beat-up original as a model to know where to trim.

My buddy got a real nice pair from Speedway Motors of all places, but I would ring Steve at Bert's first up and see what he has in his used department. Otherwise, maybe best considering a repair job. Surely, it can't be that hard to fix... |
