We have a Club Member, he's 97, Drives this '31 Tudor. His adult daughter is right-seat, always. No need to take away his key, he'd just hot-wire.

One answer is never. The other is that you will know when it is time.

We all have an expiration date stamped on us somewhere. We shouldn't give it up until that date.

Not a lot of our members born before The Model A was produced! He could be our oldest member! Congratulations Tony!

Re: At What Age Do You Give It Up?
I'd say it's time, no matter the age, when you lose interest. If the A sits and deteriorates and it makes you feel bad to look at it, its time to sell. If you are still getting someone to wheel you out to the garage to tinker at 106 yrs old, keep at it, you haven't lost interest.

It also depends on where you live. If you live in an urban area it is more dangerous because the speed and bad habits of today’s drivers. If you live in a rural area you probably can keep driving longer depending on your physical and mental acuity.

Re: At What Age Do You Give It Up?
We have a club member in the Santa Anita A's of Arcadia, California who is in his mid 90's and looks like a man in his 60's. An amazing man, still drives his modern car and his Model A. Last I heard he still goes hiking in the mountains. He served in the army in WWII, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and crossed the Rhine in a rubber boat under fire. He was recently honored by throwing out the first pitch at Dodgers Stadium and wearing his Ike jacket that still fits. Ken is an honored treasure of our club.

Adapted from flying:
One of two things will happen. One day you will walk up to your Model A not knowing it will be your last time. One day you will walk up to your Model A knowing it will be your last time. |

Re: At What Age Do You Give It Up?
My daughter when she worked at the Va.Hospital, kept a Model A Horn and Quail on her desk.
The ol timers came by everyday to pick the items up and hold. Now and then they would carry them to the men who couldn't get around. They never gave up. |

My give-it-up date is the day I go on the wrong side of the dirt.

Re: At What Age Do You Give It Up?
Even if you can no longer drive or really work on them. You can still go out and enjoy your old car in the barn or garage. The two of you just sitting and enjoying each other’s presents.
Once sold or given away? I guarantee you will go first and the Model A will live on. I’m going to keep our last one to be there for my family to say good by to. Memories, you can’t touch. Enjoy. |

Re: At What Age Do You Give It Up?
I’m 87 and still drive my early ’28 open cab pickup and my later ’28 roadster. I only drive the pickup on nearby forest trails, mostly to gather firewood because I’m having trouble getting my feet on the brake and clutch pedals quickly. I still drive the roadster on back country roads as it is much easier for me to drive than the pickup.

Re: At What Age Do You Give It Up?
When your passengers, other drivers and/or pedestrians are at risk, you pull the plug. It isn't a month/year thing. It is a safety thing.
My uncle (macular degeneration) and my dad (cataracts) refused to give up their "right to drive" until well into their 90's. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt by either. Does your "right to drive" trump someone's "right to live"? Last edited by dean from bozeman; 11-29-2021 at 06:08 PM. |

Nice thought Dean but daily I see 30, 40 & 50 year old who should be banned from driving.
