Just a heads-up. I've been running a Wanted Ad for rumble seat latch striker hardware for my '35. I've gotten three responses from guys that say they have the stuff, but can't seem to produce photos -- but I can send them a Moneygram. When I realized that two of them had sent eMail with the exact same wording, the fish smell rose out of my computer. Here they are:

Paul Stigall (Paul S Autoshop, Timberlake, NC)

Bob D Chabot (Bob D Autoshop, Moreno Valley CA)

Kelvin Herrera (USA)

same MO, nobody's asked for $$ yet. I put em on notice that if they were scammy to not bother to reply.

I bought parts from Michael Newman, Park Forest Illinois. [email protected], He sent pictures, so I sent money for parts, amonth ago, no parts and he will not respond to any emails, another scammer.

I have had offers on my truck and responded telling them that I be willing to pay the $300 fee for an escrow agent to handle the long distant sale. No replies? One guy said that his bank in Dubai was ready to transfer the money into my account...

I'm just over the hill from Moreno Valley. Ask good old Bob Chabot for his shop address and I'll stop by and check out the parts for you. BUT don't hold your breath about him coughing up the address since we all know it doesn't exist. But it would be interesting to see what excuse/excuses for why the parts can't be inspected in person.

I too got a response from a Kelvin. Something wasn't right about his emails so I never responded. It was a day before the want ad expired.

That was a good catch Detonator--I had a wanted ad on Early V8 web and got an e-mail in my spam today from Kelvin Herrera--Smelled fishy to me also--I did not open--Just deleted--Glad you confirmed it for me--Thanx-- Don

These scammers continue to troll the websites. When they can't send photos ( they don't because they have no idea what the part looks like) and ask for a Moneygram do not respond. If you are a little suspicious in the beginning follow your instinct.

I told Paul was going to be in his area the next day and would come by to look at the part. No response. It's funny how these three have all of the parts we need and only the day before our ads go off.

I had one supposedly from a barn member,who was stuck in some sh##t country and needed cash to get his wife seen to by a doctor,send the cash by monogram,I told him my brother works at the USA embassy there and just burn over and ask for him,he will fix you up.
that was the end of that.

I once asked a scammer if he would consider a 'trade' for the part he had. He said 'waddaya got?" - I said that I'd trade him two blind crabs for one without teeth. He didn't bite....

That's why I hate placing a wanted ad, it seems to bring out all the vermin.
I got an email response once for a wanted ad, I traced the url and it was in east Africa.
I didn't realize the early ford following was that wide spread.
He also wanted a money gram and could not produce pictures.

if they ask for western union or money gram they are scammers, guaranteed, if you send them any money it will be like shoveling shit against the tide to get your money back or receive your part

Some times I'm tempted to place a wanted add for some thing like an original 1929 Model A Brake Master cylinder or original Fuel pump just to see what replies I get and to pull their chain. I imagine them searching on the net for hours for photos to send me of my non existent part - But I've got better things to do-Karl

Karl .... I think the same way. It really ruins the Wanted column. I would love to load the column up with fictitious ads but then all of us lose. How about a clutch for a '39 Ford-O-Matic ?

EarlyNewman tried to scam me on some Porsche parts on a Porsche Forum.

I caught him when I googled the picture he sent me of the part and it was from an Ebay listing that was not his.

I found a BS-er at a local swap meet a few years back. Told him what I was looking for, he said "oh yes I have a couple of those, got his phone number. Dad told me afterwards the guy was talking out his caboose. Sure enough, I called six or seven times at different times over the next month. Never a reply. I had the impression he was just showing off for his boys.

I once bought a vehicle off eBay, drove so dang far to pick it up I couldn't come back empty handed. Amazing how you can get a turd to shine in picture. If I can't touch it I aint buying or I'm going without anymore. Lot of great honest people in the world. My world seems to be getting smaller.
