New Model A owner/member
Hi guy's I thought id say hello!
I'm Byron and I'm from Australia. I have just bought myself a Model A 5 window coupe. This is my first Vintage car so its all very new to me and there appears to be a steep learning curve owning an old classic. When I bought her she had the original Spoke rims but wrapped in some pretty average old cracked tires, So I got a new set of steel rims put on her with white walls. I liked the original rims but I'm only 32 and that's way to young to be rolling on stock rims Now I have done the right thing and gone and ordered a million different books on Model A fords and I'm spending hours trawling the Internet trying to learn as much as I can. So bare with me If I ask any silly questions. Anyways Nice to meet you all! Cheers Byron |

Thanks Guys!
She will be staying stock for a long time, I like putting around and watching everyone do a double take as I drive past them. Plus turning it into a Hot Rod is extremely expensive in Australia. Parts are not cheap. Most rod shops want about 3K for a drop axel front end. |

Welcome, Byron,
Looks like Minerva, that I had to sell when $$$ were short. My backup '29 has 16" wires. If you have mechanical brakes, be sure to put the adaptor rings behind the wheels, to keep them from cracking!! Available from most suppliers. HEY! it's RHD! Bill W. & Buster T.

Thanks Guys I Live In Darwin in the NT.
The Coupe is a lefty still. The guy I bought her from is an Importer of wheels and tires and he brings in cars too. As for the wheels I have no idea what size the wheels and rims are I bought them when I got the car. Bill I do need to get adapter plates for the wheels could you point me in the right direction to get some. |

Re: New Model A owner/member
Byron, some pretty spectacular night skies up your way last night. I lived in Darwin for 25 years, and bought my Model T whilst there. Still own a couple of businesses in Winnellie and get back there every so often. Would like to take the opportunity to have a look at the coupe one day! There are some very knowledgeable Aussie members on this forum who know where to locate bibs and bobs for restoration work; they have assisted me with my current 1928 Model A project immensely. Plus the NZ guys know especially about RHDs.

Welcome to the hobby. It's a great one. I hope one of the books you purchased was Les Andrews ' Model A Mechanic's handbdook. It is a great 'step by step" to most repairs etc. This venue is also an excellent sourcesof information. You might also check by the Ahooga Board as it has a message board as well as a chat room. WWW.Ahooga.com
Lots of good folks who are knowledgable on both venues. Again, welcome. |

Hi Byron,
Welcome to the hobby. Austrailia has some active Model A Ford clubs and hopefully this attachment from Model A Ford Club of America's web site will help you hook up with one. International Chapters Part of the fun of having a Model A Ford is getting together with other owners and admirers. There are many international chapters that bring Model A activities to locations across the country. If the chapter name is in color, you may click on it to visit their web site. Re: New Model A owner/member
Bryon,
Bill is 100% correct in post #9. THIS IS A SERIOUS SITUATION. I would like to expand a little on it. Go to http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...ns#post8330045 to see illustrations of what I am talking about. Very few people run the solid wheels with mechanical brakes and I am not sure that they even sell the adapters you need anymore (I looked a while back because someone else needed them but did not find anything). What you will find is the more common adapter to use the wire wheels (1928-35) on the later hydraulic drums. This is not the same adapter. As much as I hate to say it the solution if you can't find the adapters may be to machine off the raised area but my solution would be to run wire wheels because I think they look better. If you machine off the raised area the next guy will need adapters if he wants to run wire wheels. If you are running 600-16 tires on your solid wheels they will fit on 1935 wire wheels. Remember if you start with short lug bolts you may not have enough length to accommodate the adapter. Charlie Stephens Last edited by Charlie Stephens; 04-01-2014 at 02:34 PM. |
