Default bottle of 600w

I just got 2 bottles of 600w from Macs...it doesn't seem too thick to me . Should i mix anything in with it before i put it in the trans and rear end? This is my first time doing this and it doesn't look like gear oil like i've read in other post. thanks.

...or add some STP as a thickener if you so like. Just remember that STP does not have as much lubrication qualities as regular gear lube. There are a few benefits IMO with the thicker oil. Thicker oil makes the 'A' transmission gears run quieter, and arguably thicker lube is slower to "leak". It also aids in shifting by dragging the gear speed down when the clutch is depressed during gear changes.

There seems to be a lot of variation between what is sold by the vendors labeled as 600W. I found that the stuff sold by Snyders in the can, rather than the stuff in the squeeze bottles is a lot thicker than all the others.

I use Meropa 680. I bought a 5 gallon bucket of it 5 years ago, likely it will last me the rest of my life. Rod

Make sure to get a hand-operated pump to squirt the goo in.

If you add products to make the transmission lube thicker, be advised, there is a "viscosity cliff" involved.

From my experience (albeit shorter than most), if the transmission fluid is super thick, it will make shifting in cold weather very difficult. One fordbarn'er here reported that he actually broke the shift fork trying to shift a transmission in very cold weather that recently had STP added to already very thick lube oil.

The 600W sold by my local vendor comes in a bottle labelled "Vintique" and is already plenty thick enough. It is actually a little too stiff (shifting) when it is 30 degrees out. It takes a few miles to warm up the transmission enough to where it doesn't feel like trying to stir a jar of peanut butter.

I feel that some go way too far with thick and thicker gear lube. In the early sixties untill the late seventies, I used whatever the local service stations sold, usually 90 or sometimes 140 weight. I never had shifting problems with the lighter gear lube. I now use the 250 weight 600w gear lube sold by Snyders. When the car is cold I shift quicker , after the lube warms I shift slower but double clutch either way.

If your Michigan garage is unheated, maybe thinner is better in the winter. The Model A Ford Instruction Manual (Operators's Handbook) recommended adding kerosene to the tranny to thin it during winter driving.

There's more important things than tryin' to "re-invent" GEAR OIL! We're NOT scientists, or whatever? Just use a good brand of PROVEN oil in whatever viscosity you prefer, most leak a little, live with it!
An alternative would be to look in your cupboard & ask yourself, "Should I add SORGUHM SYRUP, PEANUT BUTTER, PAM, ORGANIC OLIVE OIL, OR MARGARINE"?? These arguments get almost this SILLY! (With a childish grin, Buster T. voted for CHUNKY PEANUT BUTTER!) I didn't tell him that ooooold folks used to put ground CORK or SAWDUST to quiet down noisy rear ends as I don't want to CORRUPT his BRILLIANT mind with old tales. Bill W.

I would saw if adding kerosine was ok than any variation in 600 wt is no big deal....

Bruce,

Are there any harmful chemicals in the new type oils or gear lube?
