Default Need 1940 Ford air cleaner information

I have done a search here on the barn but haven't come up with a definitive answer. I assume there were two types of air cleaners available for the 1940 Ford. A dry element and oil bath type. What are the Ford part numbers for these air cleaners? I consulted the Green book and I came up with 19A 9600-A for the dry element type and 11A 9600-B for the oil bath type. Is this correct? Could someone also post a photo of these types of air cleaners?

Thanks for the help fellas.
Seth

Mike Kubarth can chime in but those are both 1941 part numbers. 19A Mercury and 11A Ford. Probably would work but are replacement part numbers.

If you are having your car judged, the dry (Donaldson) air cleaner has a 91A part number on the bottom along with a D inside a diamond. The oil bath air cleaners ( I believe were made by United) may not have a part number on the bottom, Mike will certainly know. As you know the Green bible has replacement parts that will work listed. I will go look at the oil bath air cleaners I have. Probably the case that some do and some don't as the spare oil bath I have doesn't have any numbers. Maybe there were more then the 2 manufacturers for Ford.

I had a PM response with part #91A 9600-A2. I assume this is correct as I do not have access to the Green book at this moment.

Seth, Here are some pictures of the air cleaners. I assume both are correct, they were on my 1940's. The open dry air cleaner has the number o1A-9600- A2. The oil bath doesn't have a number but has the D inside the diamond.

Seth,
The green book would not be ideal if going for a point judged restoration.. The 39-40 Chassis book is what you would need. They pop up on eBay from time to time and I may have a extra you can have. The green book simply listed service parts in most cases. The part # listed in the 1939-40 Chassis book is 91A-9600-A for the 85hp, and 52-9600-A for the 60HP. They are easy to Identify as the number is stamped on the underside.

Mr. Kubarth should chime in on the oil bath but I believe Ford offered United, and Donaldson oil bath air cleaners from 1935-39 or 40. Again I could be wrong on this.

I have all three of the above mentioned air silencers/cleaners and could post photos if that helps any.

The pictures in the above post are of the Donaldson oil bath used 1935-?? and the other is the correct 91A-9600

Michael & Bob,

Thanks for the information and the photos. This was a huge help.

Michael, if you have an extra copy of the 39-40 chassis parts book I'd gladly send you some money for it. You can get a hold of me on my cell or facebook. On the crankshaft, I want to take my block in to get checked soon (this week or next). If my block comes back as good then I'll get back with you on the crank. If I have to find another engine then I'm just back to square one. Thanks for the help here, it is greatly appreciated. I'd like to put this car back together as original, have it judged then go from there.

Seth, Others have offered some really good and accurate advice.

I will detail the filters for the 85 & 95HP engines only...

Dry type cleaners were supplied to Ford by three different companies. All filters were very similar to one another.
All filters have the base part number stamped in the bottom. 91A-9600.
The filter supplied by AC had a suffix of A-1. The filter supplied by Oakes, had a suffix of A-2 and finally, the filter supplied by Industrial Wire had a suffix of A-3.

Oil bath filters were supplied by two companies. The regular oil bath filters were supplied by Donaldson and United. The Donaldson filter had a raised "D" on the bottom. Its cover had six embossed "lines" formed in to it that generated outward from the center. This filter was made obsolete March 18, 1940. The United filter was correct throughout the entire 1940 production. Its lid had three concentric circles formed in to it. There are no numbers stamped in to either regular oil bath filter. Both were options available for an extra fee.
Lastly there were two heavy duty oil bath filters. The filter supplied by United was approved for the entire 1940 Ford production. The filter supplied by Handy was made obsolete in March, 1940.

And that response is proof alone as to Mr Kubarth being the 40 expert and the new 40 technical advisor for the club.

Kube, thank you for this information. I have the current copy of the 1940 Ford book but it does not have this kind of detail. I'm looking forward to the new and improved edition. Many thanks for your time.

Anyone know where I can get one of these air cleaner clamps? Using a hose clamp works, but sure is difficult when one wants to do a quick look into the carburetor throat.. I guess I could make one..

I will post same in WTB section

thx
