Default 37' pickup, lower door seals

Started looking closely at the interior of my doors, preparing to make a template for new panels. I noticed that there is an indention running across the bottom, approx. 1/2" wide with holes for snap fasteners. They were the button type with spring wires, there are a couple left in the door. My question is, was there a door seal mounted here? It looks as if the panel would then lay over the top creating a flush surface. Looked in a couple of catalogs but they show cross sections of door seal materials. Am thinking that a strip was attached here with a sweep extending downward. If not, were the lower edges of the panels held down with fasteners in these holes? I have never seen an original so I am guessing here. As always, any help would be greatly appreciated. - Q
