Make life simple, use adjustable lifters. 75000 miles on my 8ba and no wear or adjustment problems. I used Frl Pro, were available from local parts store. Actually used them with a reground cam and used the same lifters when I replaced the reground with a Max 1 Just my 2 cents worth!!!

There are two kinds of OEM lifters.
One is made from cast iron and has angled slots in the side.
The ones you want are the earlier ones that are steel and only have two 5/32 holes in the side.
These are also the lightest.

I am the one that has a lot of lifters. I mentioned on here I had n.o.s lifters for the 8BA. Sold quite a few. Pete or anyone could you please tell me what n.o.s lifter be it Ford, Johnson Adj, Wholert, Melling Adj., Badger, TRW, Sealed Power, for the flathead V8 that is not flat and cupped as you suggest. I will check any brand you mention as I have them all. Sincerely Fred

No one said cupped, that would mean they are concave. Lifters should be radius ground (some Mopar are ground on a 60 inch radius), but as Pete said they will probably be angle ground. Easiest way to check is to place two new lifters face to face, if angle ground it will be readily apparent.

Fordors what I am asking about not what lifter company's are doing as of the last 25 years for production vehicles but show or tell me what the company's were doing in the 30'40's,50's and 60's. Come up with some production lifters that were not flat. Thanks

If V8 followers are flat faced from the factory, Ford took a step back, cos Model A and B followers were ground with a radius.

Im a little bit amazed about people having such problems with lifter weight for a normal driver.
Start comparing to an OHV flat tapppet where you have a lot more stuff to move around.
If youre gonna start reving it hard weight counts as you need harder springs to keep it from floating and loading the cam and lifters harder.
I had an idee of installing a set screw in the adjustable lifters to make sure they stayed in place.
Probably no fun to work with after a few years...
The question to be asked is why dont we want a flat ground tappet ?
What is our goal here ?
Grinding a radius tappet takes either a radius grinder or a radius dressed stone...both cost more then just doing an angle.
How much of an angle does it take...if ford saved up here what is the failure rate ?

Well Murre it all depends on the design. If you put the centre line of the cam lobe off from of the centre line of the follower, grind a radius on the follower, and an angle on the face of the cam lobe, the follower will rotate and the wear will be reduced. If the V8 is not specifically designed to do that, then you ll have everything on the same centre line, and follower and lobe dead flat (presumably!)

None I have ever seen were tapered from the factory.
