What's the difference between "frame" and "chassis"?

I see them out here on the east coast going from $150 to 500 just the frame. Don't be in a hurry. I had a complete 1930 chassis with engine trans given to me It was a running A that the owner wanted just the body to make a hot rod

Are you looking for a price to sell one you have? Or,looking to buy one.Either way the price difference can be big, depending on which 28 frame it is.If an early 28 does it have the LH parking brake handle still riveted onto the frame rail? Still have the rigid engine mount on the front crossmember? Are the runningboard brackets still riveted on?

a title matching the number on the frame is probably worth as much as the frame

The frame is just that, the "square box" so to speak. The chassis is the frame plus all or most of the hardware that's supposed to be mounted on it. Axles, motor mount, possibly transmission& engine, etc

Ahh but the age-old question much like the Chicken or the Egg! So does the title with an original Ford-issued number properly belong to the Frame, -or the Engine??

A frame with a valid title to go with it, is at least 2-3 times the price of a frame without a title. In the SoCal area, ... you could by a good rolling chassis on the east coast for the price of just a bare frame and title in SoCal. BUT, ... 9 out of 10 times, the SoCal parts would be in far better condition, especially from the desert areas.

Regards
Bill

I live on the East Coast as well and I've seen the prices vary from free to $1,000.

Any frame with an asking price of over $250 quickly becomes something the owner is hauling around for quite some time.

Oddly, nice and clean front or rear crossmembers can sell for $150 on their own.

Thanks you for the reply. I was starting to think I wouldn't get one.
Here, a chassis is chassis alone. One with all those other components on it would either have them listed or, if they are all there, called a running chassis.
We all say we speak English but.......

around 2016 I sold a nice straight bare 30 or 31 frame for $200.
no pits but do not remember if engine # was visible.
young man drove from St Augustine FL to Asheville NC to buy it.

Ronn…correct not right for everyone
By buying a title in TN, it’s likely/probably/could be an attempt to skirt TN law as well as convenience.
Properly approached, in TN, obtaining a title on a constructed vehicle requires (among other things) an affidavit of construction and a highway patrol safety inspection. Then , a title will be issued with a new VIN. Counties will collect sales tax on a constructed vehicle based on FMV/some appraisal; its best to have receipts of costs of construction to avoid over collection.

For the public, it’s a matter of safety. But then again, are early cars really compliant with public safety? Even transacting a Model A from one to another properly with original titles doesn’t address safety. But, we’ve had several hot rod accidents in our area due to mechanical malfunctioning

Oh well……

Yes, in most states, antique an d classic cars only require safety requirements up to the year the car was built. so one would not necessarily need seat belts in a model A. However, when doing a reconstruction of a "rod" then all sorts of safety inspections are required, such as turn signals and belts, etc. so 2 totally diff animals.

Several states have no inspection of an antique. All depends on classification. Clear as mud. In NJ, we dont do inspections on antiques. In NY they do, which Ive recently found out.

Funny about NY state inspections..on moderns they do a service brake lining inspection. I told the inspector okay, pull it down and check.. the rears you need a hub puller to check.. the fronts pull down easy but unless you hit the adjuster you backed off dead on, I’ll be back here till you finally get the adjustment right.. he took my word that I just installed new linings… when he was done I heard it crank for a spell, stop and crank again for a spell before it started.. when I questioned him he forgot to turn the key on.. got a fresh sticker however..

I did have a laugh with him, told him I’d be just as green with the new stuff.
