Default "E" brake cross shaft removal ?

My frame has the later 31 style emergency brake cross shaft with the brake rod arms on the outside of the frame; there is a picture of this one in the Les Andrews handbook, but there is no information regarding the removal of the shaft & or arms? I did find one old post regarding this, but there was not a lot of information - can this shaft be removed with the body on the frame?
Just going on the condition of the brake parts I have disassembled so far, I see no reason to bet the farm on the condition of the bushings, if any still even exist Someone must have done this job successfully before
on this later style shaft ??????? Thanks, Steve

It is very unusual for the semi spherical bushes to wear in fact most are semi seized due to lack of lubrication . They respond well to very carefull heat, WD 40 then regular oil . To remove the arms the pins have to be punched out .Have a look to see what size the pin heads are ,if different sizes punch out from the small end . I cant remember if the pins are tapered or not . With both arms removed I dont think you can remove the shaft with the splash shields in place . I really cant think why you would want to remove the shaft it is rare that the the lever ends and bushes are that worn . Just free up the bushes and lube them !!!

I get to do the pics again

The pins are tapered and will only knock out one way

If your bushes are too worn, you can replace them with the split type available from vendors which fit the service brake shaft

The originals were not meant to be lubricated or they will attract dirt and seize. Ford used a woven fiber insert inside the bushing that doesn't require lubrication. MACs Antique auto parts sells similar woven insert bushings like the originals. There may be other suppliers. You may be able to get away with leaving the shaft as is if the bushing is not to loose.

Although Ford designed the system to be "dry" this turned out not to be such a good idea . I dont think Henry thought that his A would still be on the road nearly 90 years later in such large numbers . The problem is that the fiber in the bush gets damp over time especially in wet weather and rusts the shaft .The shaft ends get rusty when the paint wears off .In my experience (English weather)this causes the assembly to become stiff in operation. In practise the fiber in the bush holds oil and keeps the assembly free . Very little road dirt gets up in that area anyway unless you go offroading . The bronze split type would work fine but of course would need lube too .

Thanks for all the help , specially "Juggler" for the great pictures
Everything is now off the car except for the cross shaft, and I will try and attempt its removal tomorrow. It's all a great help!
