Default Operating temp question

For you gents with water temp gauges, on a moderate day (think somewhere in the 70's for outside temp) what water temp would you expect while idling? If you have an idea at a higher outside temp that would be helpful also.

I am pondering a bluetooth temp gauge (no gauge in the car, simply read temp on smartphone) and I am trying to get a couple starting points for the phone app.

Thanks,

Scott

You want people to play with a phone app while operating a motor vehicle?

You might borrow or buy one of these...

You could sample your car and other club members' cars.

Seventies outside, 160. Nineties outside, 190 to 195.

Temp will depend on the thermostat being used. I run 180* stats and the engine runs 170-175. Heat burns the fuel more efficiently, so is a good thing.

currentlly I just sit the phone on the seat and glance at it. Could put it in a windshield mount, etc.

Generally, that would be minimum operating temp unless you drilled a bunch of bypass holes.

Peyton - if you let it idle for 15 minutes or so, would it go higher?

Jim, that's strange. You run a 180° thermostat but the engine runs at 170°? So your stat never opens? Or is your temperature gauge NFG? Just curious.

I have a 160° stat in now and my engine runs ~175°. I had a 180° stat and the engine ran 195°, which is OK, but I felt it was a little too hot.

I agree a warmer engine is more efficient. It also vaporizes the BAD stuff in the crankcase from the combustion process.

Thanks, I have data from my car - just looking for some more sample points. I really don't bump into to many A's where I am at to sample directly.

Outside temp in 90's 195 running a Berg Radiator and love it. APO gauge from Snyders. Vintage Precision http://vintageprecision.com/products...on_manual.html

Hey, stouchton. Exactly what app are you looking at?

I could see the usefulness for those that don't want to install aftermarket temp gauges or carry around infared thermometers in their vehicles.

PS: I run 160-180, original Rad and no thermostat in either vehicle.

If he wants to monitor what his temp is on a phone app makes no difference to me. He is just asking for info, not our opinion.

Could you post a link to the temerature sensing device please, I can think of tons of uses for detecting/diagnosis in my farm equipment and beyond

I'm actually pursuing this for the classic car industry. Company I work for generates custom apps, and we do all the electronics. This goes beyond just water temp, and includes tach, oil press, bat volts, etc. This is just my side project, tossing it into public domain with no intent of protecting - a couple guys that work for me are interested in helping to develop.

My 67 Camaro is restored to factory original except exhaust and wheels. Car had idiot lights, but I temporarily put A-pillar gauges in it. Want to ditch the gauges since they weren't factory. I have a windshield phone mount, figured it would be perfect for temporary gauges and could also do some data logging.

Anyway... I would also like gauges in my A, but don't want to permanently install thinking it goes against originality (I could be wrong about that!). Need to scale things appropriately to make it easily readable. Think of oil pressure, very easy to have a scale for the A and a different scale for small block chevy - same goes for volts. Easy to select digital or analog.

So, just gathering data and playing. It might already exist, and be patented. If not, I just tossed it in public domain so no one can patent!!!!!

Right now I am using a barbecue thermometer with an app to monitor radiator temp - trying to come up with the best stealth install. My radiator was "well done" driving home the other night!

I was pondering a magnetic mount infrared bluetooth thermometer looking at the radiator......

Pinesdune - this is what got me thinking about it. Hope the link works. I bent the sensor to fit in the radiator, but working on a smaller version. Also see the need for the infrared version.

Henry would be amazed seeing water temperature monitored with a smart phone. I'm sure the phone would amaze him too!

With the food thermometer today it went to 165 after 10 mile ride outside temp 65 easy driving. I have had it to 180 pushing tcar hard on a warmer day the motometer works pretty good I don't see a reason to permanently install a temp gauge

Stouchton

Don't know if it would. Hope not. Run with a new three core radiator and 160 thermostat. Also have back up water circulation for closed thermostat. The back up system seems to
help a lot.
