Default fuel pump push rod up or down

which end of the push rod seats down into engine and the other into the fuel pump arm? my push rod is from dennis carpenter as you can see in pics with groved circular marks on one end and smooth on the other.

The smooth end goes into the engine port.

Don't forget to grease up the cavity where the rod goes on the fuel pump.
