New member intro and a question about mirrors
Greetings everyone,
I am in the boonies of north Georgia and recently found a pretty nice and mostly original '39 Standard sedan. This looks like a good place to find help with minor to major repairs. I'll try to not ask too many questions, mostly just the dumb ones!! My opening question is how to get the door hinge pins out to install a mirror on the passenger side to match the driver side. Does anyone have a good technique for getting the original pin out and the new pin in? Thanks in advance for your help. Ron |

Welcome to the barn,
Check out the link below, Some have used the pin removal tool with success others not so much. I think Bob Drake sells the tool. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...ge+pin+removal |

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
I believe many folks on the Fordbarn have reported that nothing is gained by installing a mirror on the pass. side. Do a SEARCH. You may just be opening a can of worms.

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
As Fordy points out the passenger side mirror is almost useless. If you do want to install one I have had success with the correct size punch and penetrating oil. I will admit that sometimes they can be a real pain.

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
I have no experience with adding one... but my 1941 does not have one and I do not feel that it is a hindrance on safe driving. Remember most cars of this era had NO side view mirrors and the drivers used only the rear view and looked over the shoulder. The massive windows were good for something!

I would love to post a pic of my car but this forum exceeds my technological capabilities. Any advice on posting a pic would be appreciated.

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
Welcome to the Barn, you have a great looking sedan. I have used the Bob Drake tool with success removing hinge pins, but it will chip the paint some. I would not attempt to remove the hinge pins on such a beautiful looking car. I do not have any experience with how effective a right hand hinge pin mirror would be.

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
I had stock cowl mirror on our '41 and it vibrated so bad it was useless. I agree P.S. mirrors are also useless except for a passenger. I ended up with 4" peep morrors on the top of the doors. was a great improvement for me driving, but still P.S. was a problem

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
My car is a 36 sedan. I installed a mirror on driver side (hinge pin type) and no pbms. Passenger side is a different story. I finally installed a peep mirror with a long arm to the mirror itself. It works for me because i can adjust the seat back far enough, but for my daughter who is shorter and has to have the seat pulled more forward, the mirror is useless. The "post" to the right of the windshield and in front of the door gets in the way.

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
Thanks everyone for the replies and the hints on posting pics. I may have a passenger side hinge mount mirror for sale. I really don't want to mess up the paint any more than it already is. The pin in the driver side mirror mount is not down all the way, so the mirror is loose. Guess I'll just have to try to beat it in the rest of the way.

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
That is a great looking car, should be fun driving it.
I personally like the look of matched hinge pin mirrors, but agree the passenger side one isn't worth the work to install, possibly with the exception that you are repainting the car. I bet very few cars were sold new with passenger side mirrors. |

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
I love my passenger side mirror, especially when I am backing out of the garage. I tried that c-clamp thing from Drake, it makes a great paper weight. Burt's Model A sells ($50 when I bought it) a much better clamp that does press the pin out without hurting anything. The only change I made was longer bolts and for the push pin, I drilled the set hole out and use the shank off of 1/4 inch bolts.

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
I use my passenger side mirror all the time but I added a stick-on convex mirror to it. That made a huge difference. I can see the edge of the road and cars in the right lane.

Ron - Greetings from the Low Country of Georgia and thanks for starting this thread. I have owned a 1939 Convertible for only 4 months and I too want a Passenger side mirror. There are times when needed IMO. I have tried PB Blaster and a 4-Lb hammer and it has gotten the grooved portion out of the top of the hinge but I can't get it any further. Persistence is my middle name and I will keep trying as well as use the Tom Sawyer approach when I have a friend over! The top pin on the driver's side door hinge is not a Pin at all but rather a long screw that is not quite long enough, so another shorter screw was inserted by me from the bottom to keep the bottom of the mirror bracket from swinging out when I tighten the set screw, which came with my Dennis Carpenter mirrors. My car came with no side mirrors and with the top up, which I admit is rare, a passenger or a passenger side mirror is almost a necessity. PM if you find success and I will also keep trying. PS I haven't tried it with the door "open" and someone pushing or lifting on the door to take the weight off of the pin. With the door "closed" it might put the pin in a bind. It went in, it will come out! And you are correct that these folks on this forum have a ton of experience and they are eager and willing to share. |

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
I did what "38bill" did.
I'm glad I did. Coupled with the curb feelers on that side, I can spare my whitewalls a good scrubbing if nothing else! Also put a camera on the rear, WHAT an improvement. It's hard to see out of a 3 window on a good day. |

Ramblin Reck,
Apparently I haven't made enough posts to do private messages, so if you will send me an email we can coordinate using Steve Kennedy's tool which he has graciously offered. |

Johndee138; If possible please post photos and info on how you installed your rear view camera and its related wiring. That sounds like a great solution.

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
I have a passenger side mirror on my '37 Sedan. I put a dome mirror over the flat mirror, available anywhere. makes the passenger side very visible and very useful. Much safer.

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
19Fordy here is what I used
https://www.amazon.com/LeeKooLuu-Mon...s%2C198&sr=8-3 I made a bracket out of 1" stock and it positions the camera right in the middle of the dip on the rear bumper. Fished the wiring up to the glove box and the screen and power cord live in there when not in use. The power plugs into the cig lighter (I'm 12v now) but you could rig up an aux battery to run this if you haven't upgraded. the screen sticks to the windshield via suction cup. The thing works GREAT and cheap too! The hardest part was making the camera mount bracket that bolts to the inner bumper arms. Camera could mount anywhere though. I wanted it centered. It has a broad vision field and could be offset. |

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
A couple of years ago, I was testing a fully isolated voltage (12 to 6) drop device that also gave out "clean" power we were developing. To test it, I installed a bunch of cheap 12 volt devices in my '51, including a GPS, a CD player, and a backup camera, The latter turned out to be addictive, so I made it a permanent fixture. I mounted the camera on the bottom of the license plate using the bracket supplied, but the hardest part was mounting the screen so you could see it without it sticking out like a sore thumb. I think I paid $30 on Amazon and it works great (too great, actually).

Glad your eyes are good enough to see the back up camera screen. I can't even focus on the one in my every day car.

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
After much cursing and banging with a BMF hammer and drift, I finally got the pins out and the original mirror modified and the new mirror installed. I have to agree with those of you who said the passenger side mirror is worthless. A passenger would find it useful but a driver, not so much. Oh well, the car looks symmetrical with both mirrors!

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
Hey Welcome, and here is another vote for your cool car.
Don't be tempted to hammer the end of the pin that prodtudes from the bottom of the hinge no matter how much Kroil or other penetrating oil you soaked it with. There are splines at the top 1/4" that holds the pin from turning. A "press" type device that pushes on the end of the pin is your best chance of moving it up. You have to overcome those splines that are stuck in the top portion of the hinge. My method which has worked 75% of the time has been to first grind the part protruding out the bottom flush with the hinge. Then I mark the center of the pin with a center punch, drill it with my smallest drill bit for about 1/4 inch deep, then with 3/16" . Then I use a Hinge pin press (not a Drake one but one made in the 50s) that has different length fittings with 1/8" protrusions of varying lengths to force the pin upward. All the parts of this thing are similar to the pictured ones and all parts are hardened steel. Really nasty ones like from hulks that have been in the rain for 40+ years may need to be drilled from the top too. Even if you have to drill it out you can find oversized pins or make them yourself if you or a buddy that has a lathe. Your car is so nice you need to be very careful and not try to use any heat like you could with a hulk. Good luck and as others have said, if the door doesn't hang low, and your only reason for taking that pin out is to put a mirror on, Don't mess with it and put on a peep mirror on the passenger side. I use them as others do. |

Re: New member intro and a question about mirrors
Passenger mirrors on old cars are pretty much useless. I use peep mirrors on out 47 and have the passengers side set so the passenger can check for lane charges. Also if you don't need new pins I wouldn't get into replacing pins
