F100 Brake conversion
As I stumble around the net trying to plan my brake upgrade and trying to figure what pieces i need it occured to me I was reinventing the wheel. It is commonly described as a F100 adaptation. What years of F100 would work. There is the issue of setback, shoe width, bolt pattern, etc. My desire to have a 4.5" bolt pattern is easily dealt with as drums and hubs can be easily redrilled as long as the center hole is 3 1/4" or smaller.
Is there a site that will give dimension date on specific brake drums and backing plates. With that kind of info I could be more auccessful in locating parts in wrecking yards. What years of F100 brakes will work? Clearly 70's vehicles will be easier to find that 50 and 60's pickups. What years will have the backing plate bolt pattern I need, or can be drilled to match. Which F100s are 12". Are some 11 inc" A good referance site would be great, |

Re: F100 Brake conversion
Russ....We know that you're aiming for a 5 X 4-1/2" bolt pattern on the rear of a Ford banjo rear end. Surely you have realized by now that the difficult factor in swapping brakes on a banjo is the tapered axle/ hub situation. Nothing else that I have ever seen will directly substitute with that 12" Ford brake drum/ hub. Many folks will agree that the rear LOCKHEED brakes on a Ford are well-able to do their share of the braking required at the rear end, as the fronts do the majority of the "stopping". With that thought in mind, why not just re-drill the 5 X 4-1/2" bolt circle into the ' 40 drums and be done with it at the rear? You can still adapt F100s re-drilled at the front, or any one of the other available options for BENDIX-types on the front. My thoughts are just that the rear hubs/tapered axle situation at the rear make any swap so difficult to engineer. DD

Re: F100 Brake conversion
You guys have been great. I really appreciate your counsel on what I am trying to do. 19Fordy, thank you for the links as I have read them all. V8COOPMAN, my thoughts have evolved to what you reccomend I do. Handling the rears as you suggest wont preclude doing what i ultimly wanted, if i can find a way down the road.
Thanks for your input guys. |

Earlier, you asked about F100 drum diameter. I believe that folks mostly utilize the '53-'56 backing plates when making this swap. Seems like the '57s and later saw some oddball design changes that were not so friendly toward our swapping needs. The '53-'56s were 11" in diameter, but the BENDIX self-energizing action made them superior to the Ford LOCKHEEDS at 12" . DD |

Re: F100 Brake conversion
48 to 56 f1 or f100 front backing plates are the same
53 to 56 front drum/hub is easier to get a replacement drum. 48 to 52 had a different offset to the hub/drum and drums are more exspensive but a late model bronco rear drum can be made to work 57 and up backing plates will not work. But the shoes and hardware will work from 48 to the early 60s. You can also change the hardware setup to self adjusting if wanted |

Re: F100 Brake conversion
Great stuff guys! mrtexas, wow, that table is just the ticket, thanks. skidmarks, thanks for adding to the mix here. Good stuff guys.
Mrtexas, quick question, am i correct in interpreting the table that the front and rear use the same f1/f100 components less the ebrake of course? |

Front backing plates will bolt-up; but would need E-brake provision added. The early rear hubs would still be used; albeit with machine work. |

Re: F100 Brake conversion
The table linked to is one I put together. It was for F1 hubs but most of it also applies to F100 hub conversions. This was for a 33 Ford install.

I have a set of reconditioned F-100 brakes in the classified at this time; but I could easily provide F-1 hubs instead if desired. |

Re: F100 Brake conversion
Just to be accurate, I believe Charlie means that the wheels will fully fit flat, and completely down over the drum. Looks can sometimes be deceiving. DD
