Rear Glass Installation

Could someone tell me or post a link with instructions on how to install the rear window on a 1948 sedan coupe. I’m just wanting to get as much information as possible before I do it wrong and break it.

I followed a Ford Shop Manual on my’50 and it wasn’t real difficult. I’m sure there must be reprints for ‘48. You definitely want one or two people helping.........Mark

These are instructions from 42-48 shop manual. There are pictures that show 4 hands.

Set glass on edge and force rubber over glass, using one hand to guide the rubber and the other to press it down into place

Sealing compound should be squeezed between the rubber and the outer surface of the glass only.

Place a piece of twine in and around the outer channel of the rubber molding with the loose ends hanging on the outside top center of the glass.

Having cleaned all foreign matter from the metal frame the assembly may now be installed by holding it in position and forcing outward with the pressure of both hands. With the assistant on the outside to pull the twine at right angles to the glass, pulling the rubber molding over the metal flange of the window opening.

Apply sealing compound on the outside between the rubber and metal frame.

I have never done this, I am only copying what the shop manual says. Others that have done it probably will comment further with tips. Good luck.

I have done it by myself, using an inner tube on the inside to provide pressure on the glass. I used Mckay assembly lube.

This isn't an overly difficult task if you buy a good quality seal - suggest either Carpenter or Steele Rubber. As has been mentioned, the window is installed from the inside with a cord used to pull the outer lip over the channel. It is easier with a helper - I've done it solo a couple of times.

I did mine today. Used Dawn for lubrication and a plastic stick with tapered ends that i got from a glass shop years ago. Lubed the groove and held it up into the opening with hand pressure. Had a friend work his way around the gasket on the outside prying with the plastic stick. Went in slick with no string.

How is the glass removed? Do you just cut the seal and push it out?
