My "H" series 226 oil pressure is about 5# at idle and goes up to 30#+ while driving. It has been this way since a rebuild in 1987. I never touched the oil pump when it was rebuilt. I have 33,000 miles on the rebuild. I also have oil dripping from the bell housing from a worn/old rear crankshaft seal.
To me this has been normal- no overheating or abnormal oil consumption, only the real seal leak that started many moons ago.

remove the pan, you will see that there is one bolt holding the pump to the engine, remove it and try to twist it back and forth till it moves freely, pull it down and out, the pump may be stuck in the engine, if it is you will have to use a couple of pipe wrenches to get the pump to move so it will come out, there are 4 bolts on the bottom of the pump to get to the gears, you can but a rebuild kit or a new pump from most of the v/8 dealers listed in the hot rod magazines, or speedway

The pump is externally mounted. If you want to remove the oil pump to check it out, these are the directions from the shop manual for the "H" series 226: "Disconnect the right hand front engine support. Disconnect the radiator hoses. Raise the engine so the pump will clear the frame when removed. Remove the screws that hold the pump to the block and remove the pump."

The h has a external pump can be seen in the pic. On side of block, don't think the pan has to come off.
