Duals on a 221 engine
I have a 41 Ford, 221 engine; and plan to put twin exhaust. What is the least expensive way to do this? thank you in advance.

Re: Duals on a 221 engine
I would contact Red's Headers in southern California.....they will sell you the whole set up from headers to pipes to mufflers...at a very fair price...plus it will fit perfectly ....a company highly recommended...Matt in Alameda

Re: Duals on a 221 engine
I've got Red's headers on most of our Flatheads, including our '39 CS with an otherwise stock 221. I also run Brockman Mellow-Tone (steel packed) mufflers.

Re: Duals on a 221 engine
I would get a quote from a local shop that can bend exhaust pipe
and run off the stock manifolds. It should be cheaper. You wont gain any thing but noise with headers.

I agree with BrianCT, You don't need headers, in fact they do little to improve performance.

Re: Duals on a 221 engine
I find that our Flatheads run a bit cooler with headers (a good thing here in Florida). I don't really care about improved performance but I do love the sound (noise) they produce. But if you're just interested in converting to duals, (the least expensive way), go with BrianCT's suggestion.

Re: Duals on a 221 engine
Thanks again. I don't expect better performance just noise and the look of two pipes. I ran twin straights on my 50 Ford and plan to do the same with the 41. Back in the day I ran glass packs and the police were making you take them off for noise. I live in the same town and ran the straights three years on the 50 with only a smile. Now I am close to being old as dirt, back then I was trying to look like James Dean. I will contact the man that does our exhaust work. I appreciate the comments.

Re: Duals on a 221 engine
Abbie I had my duals in my avatar installed in 1987. Stock 59a manifolds, stainless steel pipes and mufflers. Haven't touched them since. Costs more of course but if you're going to keep your 41 for a long time it's worth it in my opinion.

Re: Duals on a 221 engine
Had the local shop put straight duels on '41 2door with stock manifolds and get smiles from everyone and I grin a lot.

Re: Duals on a 221 engine
I have Red's Headers and dual Smitty's with pennies in the heat risers. I took it to a shop and they bent and installed the pipes. The owner was so impressed with the sound he ordered a case of Smitty's to sell to the public. Of course no other engine sounds like a Ford Flathead.
