Question Stewart Warner Horn - Not sounding good

I have gone through my SW horn, cleaning the contacts, replaced brushes, adjusted, oiled, etc.

This past weekend we joined with 37 other pre-WWII vehicles for a car show at the Village of Winona (there were 19 Model A's)

Everybody's Klaxon-type horns sounded very similar with the classic aaah-OOO-gah sound; except for mine.

My horn sounds like AHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhh-guh.

I have tried to tighten the adjustment one click at a time - and after two clicks it sounds more like uhhhhh-guh (if the armature spins at all.)

Loosening and it sounds more like ah--hh-hhh-hhhhh-hh - gah

- I have tried this with the cover off and on. same results.

- I replaced the diaphragm and rotated it 180 degrees and it's still the same.

- I tried to rotate the diaphragm 90 degree and it wouldn't work at all.

At this point, I've resigned myself to a horn that sounds like a screaming goose.

Ideas?

Mike,

Put your original diahragm back in. These after market ones do not work that well. Now, back out the adjusting screw until there no contact and begin to tighten it down one click at a time until you have the correct three part sound.

Should your motor not spin fast enough you will never tune it correctly.

Call me or provide me with your phone number and I will call you and try to help you with this issue.

Regards,

Neil

Neil is the best. He fixed mine and it sounds great. Great guy and fair price.

I hope you aren't using 12 volts on a 6 volt horn.

6 on 6 and it should sound good if oiled and cleaned. I used an A&L diaphram and it sounds good.

Some repro horn buttons don't give a good ground contact and get hot with very little use. You could try grounding the horn right at the horn to see if you have a horn button or wire problem.
