Best Source: Gear Shift Lever
I am rebuilding a transmission and was wondering who has the best source for shift levers.
I have read in many catalogs that the quality of reproductions is not as good as an original, however the three originals I have are so pitted and rusted that I'm questioning whether they would be worth restoring. Are all the replacement shift levers from the same source, or are some better than others. I am not going for a show car - I'm going strictly for a driver. Thanks for your ideas. ================================================== ======= As an aside, I have soaked two of the shifters in Evapo-Rust and they are now rust free and I can see where the plating used to be. ================================================== ======= Mike in NRN IN |

Re: Best Source: Gear Shift Lever
All that I have seen almost touch the instrument panel on the 30-31 models. The levers were originally butler nickle finish. For a driver car I have used spray can silver and nobody has ever noticed the difference. There is some spray can chrome type paint that looks pretty good. One guy that I know tried bending one of the repro shift levers for better clearance and the chrome flaked off. I did purchase a reconditioned transmission tower with the chrome shift lever for my roadster, in hopes that the shift lever would be a rechromed original but it was no doubt a repro , because it is very close to the instrument panel when in second or reverse. I just decided to just live with it rather than risking damaging the chrome by bending it. There may not be a problem with the fit if used on a 28-29

Bert's, in Denver has re-chromed & re-balled originals.

28-9 are different than 30-31. Original is better than repo. Try Berts. Bob

Re: Best Source: Gear Shift Lever
The bend is different on 28-29 vs 30-31 as mentioned above. The reproduction ones are manufactured differently than the originals and there have been some reported failures.

I used metal alumium spray paint from rust-tolem read the instrution first you need to put small amout of paint and repeat. I did mine a it is pitted and it looks real good for a driver.
