Default A New twist for Folks with rear main oil leak….

Situation: New rebuilt engine, all gaskets properly installed, yet more than normal oil leaking out the rear of engine after driving (oil coming out flywheel housing hole). First thought was that there was too much old in crankcase, so drain about a half quart. Saw some improvement, but still more oil leaking than what I would consider normal, (a couple of tea spoons after parking is normal to me). All new Babbitt bearings, end play well within spec. So what do I try next?

I pulled off the oil filler cap and looked inside at the baffles. Something did not look right. With a flashlight I then looked at the baffles in my other Model A that has hardly any leaks at all. What I found is somewhere along the life of my Exxon Valdes roadster someone had closed down the baffles where they were tight against the sides of the fill tube. This would definitely cause too much crankcase pressure at driving speeds and force oil out the rear of the engine. With the aid if a long screwdriver I was able to open up the top two baffles. After a short drive last night, it looks like my massive oil leak has been resolved.

I can only conclude that someone closed the baffles down to prevent oil blowing out the fill tube. No, opening up the baffles back to where they should be did not incur oil blowing out the tube.

I pass this on just in case someone else may have this problem. It fixed mine and I didn’t have to pull the oil pan or rear main… Sometimes we just get lucky..

I've seen the same thing a couple times on oil fill tubes I picked up along the way. I rebent them just as you did, using a long screwdriver.

I have seen where the oil caps are pushed all the way down on the fill tube causing blockage and to much crank case pressure, same problem. something else to watch out for!
