Clam Shell question .
Were the two felt seals as in the gasket set original ??? Every gasket set I have had over the years include these fluffy seals . I find them a pain to install guessing they have to well doped with grease and "fudged" into position . In my heap of clamshells I came across a pair with cork seals rock hard and been in many a long year . HHMMM I thought and checked the cork seal that fits the rear oilpan and a perfect fit just needs to be cut to length . The cork protrudes about 1/8" so should give a good seal . When I bolted the clamshells together I could feel the cork being compressed maybe I get a grease leak but I doubt it .

Re: Clam Shell question .
I'm thinking I played around with cork ones back in the 60's.

Re: Clam Shell question .
Don't know the answer to your question if they are original or not.
I find that they don't fit as tight/fill the gap as well as I think they should between the outer shells and the inner cup. I cut a piece of cork gasket material and lay that inside the slot in the clam shell and then add the felt gasket on top of that. I use some Indian Head Shellac to stick the cork gasket into the slot and then do the same with the felt sticking it to the cork gasket. Holds them in place, fills the gap and keeps it sealed up better.

Re: Clam Shell question .
I don't have trouble with the thick felt seals - I have trouble with the paper gaskets in between the housings. They don't seem to be the right size or shape and result in excess hanging off no matter what I do.

Re: Clam Shell question .
The clam shells have at least 2 different bolt patterns, you may have the earlier one if the gasket doesn't line up.

Re: Clam Shell question .
The outer shells generally used a felt seal on the lip where they ride against the moving torque tube bell as a dust seal. Not all torque tubes were set up this way since more than a few manufacturer's used similar torque tube drives.
