All Ford, Mercury and T-Bird Y-Blocks were solid mushroom lifters, including trucks with a Y-Block. This includes 239, 256, 272, 292 and 312 engines.

Checking both the owner's manual and the service manual for my '55 Merc I found no spec for valve adjustment based on mileage. When they get noisy, adjust 'em. The spec is .019" for intake and exhaust, hot. If they're still too noisy go down to .017" to account for the wear on the rockers where they contact the valves. If you don't want to deal with adjusting them hot add 1/1000 to those figures.

If using a flat type feeler guage to adjust valve lash, make sure you only catch the very ends of the rocker arm where it contacts the valve in case the bottom of the rocker is worn. It might be better to use a wire type feeler guage instead of flat type.

Here is a method of adjusting with worn rocker arm pads. Scroll down on page to ADJUSTING VALVE LASH -

This will vary depending upon the application and the oil being used. Also how well the oil is being distributed to the top end is going to be a consideration. I have a 272 with almost 200K miles since it's rebuild and I check the valves at 40K mile intervals which is when I put spark plugs in it. Very rarely needs much valve lash adjustment if any. Spark plugs always look good but electronic ignition is the reason for that as well as keeping the carburetor in working condition. Ted Eaton.
