Default Procedure adjust valve..HELP!

Hi all!

I need a procedure of how to adjust valves of my engine Ford V8 1946.

I attach an example of another Ford V8 that I found over there.

Please read this article I post and tell me how to do this in my Flathead.

Thank you

Hary

That is for a engine with normal cylinder identification. Our Flatheads fire the same but call the cylinder different. Do you have adjustable lifters? It takes removing the valves if you don't have adjustable lifters.Remove the intake and have a look. Hopefully ,you have adjustables and the lifter bosses are drilled.
I made a little wheel with the firing order layed out that I attached to the shaft where the rotor goes. You need to make a pointer that screws into a front cover bolt hole. You can adjust both valves in one cylinder if that cylinder is at firing position.

As Andy posted, the 'attachment' PDF procedure is for a different engine.
There have been various ways to set valves posted here. Andy posted one way, with cylinder at firing position, set both valves for that cylinder.

Note FORD firing order, 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2, with cylinders on right bank numbered 1-2-3-4, and left bank numbered 5-6-7-8.

Another procedure that has been posted, When exh begins to open, set int, and when int begins to close, set exh.

A third procedure, been posted here, and appears in old Motor Manuals, and in old Ford service manuals...
With 4X & 1N valves OPEN, SET 3X-8N-6N-7X-3N-2X
With 3X & 8N valves OPEN, SET 1X-7N-5X-2N-4X-1N
With 1X & 7N valves OPEN, SET 8X-5N-6X-4N

Other sequences for setting valves have been posted or published. One involves DEGREEING the valves... This is more than I'm going to post here.
Watch for errors here - I've been known to make mistakes.
Just opinion.

Please check out "Fiatnuzt" on Utube ( V8 Ford valve adjustment non adjustable). His slick jig speeds up the process. Easy to make & I already made one. And then for
the adjustables, I plasma cut a holder & brazed two longer dowel pins so there will
be no need to drill the block, machined a special open end wrench and that saves
time. As for the actual adjustment, I remove the cam gear machined a addaptor
for a hand wheel and adjust one by one, I don't go by the book. Turning the hand
wheel I can feel where the cam heal is. Then another adaptor for a drill to turn the
cam to pump up the oil (while I'm also turning the crankshaft).. Can be done
in frame, just remove the radiator. Then when all said and done, I will again spin
the cam with drill and recheck valve lash while its spinning.

Hi all!

I have ADJUSTABLE lifters and I have wrench tool to adjust the lifter.

I need to understand this: what do X and N mean?

With 4X & 1N valves OPEN, SET 3X-8N-6N-7X-3N-2X
With 3X & 8N valves OPEN, SET 1X-7N-5X-2N-4X-1N
With 1X & 7N valves OPEN, SET 8X-5N-6X-4N

Thank for help

X= exhaust valve
N= intake valve

At least, that's the way I interpret it.

Hary-

When you pull of the intake you will find one of the combinations listed on the left. If you find an “a” set opened you use all of the “a” sequencing. If it is a “b” use all the “b” sequencing and so-forth.

I usually go through 2 sets to double check everything.

Hope this helps. Tom

Sequencing:

Valves Opened - Adjust these

a) 4X -- 1N ---> 3X- 3N- 8N- 6N- 7X- 2X

b) 8X – 5N ---> 1X- 7N- 6N- 7X- 3N- 2X

c) 6X – 4N ---> 5X- 2N- 1X- 7N- 3N- 2X

a) 3X – 8N ---> 1X- 7N- 5X- 2N- 4X- 1N

b) 6N – 7X ---> 5X- 2N- 4X- 1N- 8X- 5N

c) 3N – 2X ---> 4X - 1N- 8X- 5N- 6X- 4N

a) 1X – 7N ---> 8X- 5N- 6X- 4N

b) 5X – 2N ---> 6X- 4N- 3X- 8N

c) 4X – 1N ---> 3X- 8N- 6N- 7X

Hi Tom!

It is very, very clear.

So, Example:

Valves open------------- valves all colsed
-------------- ---------------------------
a) 4X -- 1N --------------> 3X- 3N- 8N- 6N- 7X- 2X

Am I right?

Thank for your time and help me with this procedure

Put cyl #1 at TDC compression stroke. Then mark the damper every 90°. Adjust #1 Ex&In, turn 90°, adjust #5 Ex&In, turn 90°, adjust #4 Ex&In, and so on, following the firing order; 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2. It is the same procedure for a 292 cu in ford v8,they also have solid lifters.And the same firing order. 2 revolutions and you are done. Keep it simple

This is the way I've always done it. Very simple and easy.
