Changing Standard Steering Wheel to a Banjo on a 1936
I have a buddy that has a 1936 Coupe that has a standard steering wheel. He would like to change it to a 36 Banjo wheel if he can locate a good original. Can the original standard steering wheel horn- light switch rod assembly be retained and used with the banjo wheel? Or is there a difference in those, that would require that to be changed as well? Thanks Nate Anello

So you don't damage the Steering Wheel while trying to remove it, you need a Steering Wheel Puller like this one. |

direct change over; the horn button/light switch affair remains the same

Re: Changing Standard Steering Wheel to a Banjo on a 1936
If you have the correct '36 banjo steering wheel, it's directly interchangeable.
Notice the "strings" on the '36 banjo wheel are sorta flat, not angled or splayed like the '37-'39 banjo wheels, and the "strings" are separated by 3 barrelled/bar stock shaped parts.

Another thing to be aware of for this job. If it comes time to lower the column drop/lock/switch, there was a break-off bolt installed at manufacture. If it's never been out they'll have another challenge. Search break-off bolt here for more details and pics.

This is what the finished product would look like - Closed 1936 Ford Deluxe with Accessory Banjo Steering Wheel. |

Re: Changing Standard Steering Wheel to a Banjo on a 1936
Thank you, for all the good advice, I was aware of the care that needs to be taken with the rod and will pass all this along to my buddy. Car was frame off restored in the 80"s and kept in a climate controlled storage, so would assume the disassemble will not be an issue. I will pass all this good information along to him. Again, thanks for all the help.

I used a bearing separator/splitter under the wheel to spread the load then a 3 legged puller. Worked good no issues.
