The whine has nothing to do with your choice of gear ratios, but rather with the improper adjustment between your ring gear and pinion gear. Further, unless you live where there is zero change in elevation in at least a 100 mile radius, you will quickly tire of having to downshift all of the time with a 3.25 gear set. That assumes you have a flathead engine.

DavidG makes a good point, if you are running a near-stock engine. If you have a larger displacement and higher compression ratio engine, you will enjoy the lower rpm and not have to shift too much. I got my 3.25 gears from VanPelt and they were perfect. Just be sure you have someone who is expert is setting up the rear end.

I also got mine (3:54) from VanPelts, along w/a rear end rebuild/installation kit.

I agree totally with Davidg and Others above . Your rear axle clearances were not set correctly and I would suggest re-examining and redoing your clearances and bearing preloads properly. I’ve done hundreds of Old ford axles and many think it’s so easy, albeit not brain surgery there is a process and skill to it.

The real cats meow is having a Columbia 2-speed. Not sure what you are putting it in but if you want more for highway use but want the power when you need it the Columbia is the way to go. I’ve seen quite a few for sale. They must be rebuilt and bulletproofed properly. It’s time consuming and not cheap but is a great way to go.
Every flathead powered car that has a 3:25 that I know of has been a disappointment to the owners.

The later ring and pinion sets won’t be available until end of August or early September. We still have one new set of the 40-4209 gears in the 3.25 ratio on the shelf. The later gears (68-4209) are all out of stock everywhere for now.
