36 ford coil remote adapter

I like to keep my car as original as possible but I have been advised to bypass the stock coil and hook up a 6V remote away from the heat. It increases spark for starting. What are your thoughts?

My opinion? If you are having a problem, have Skip Haney in Punta Gorda Florida rebuild your coil. Those adapters and remote coils always seem to cause more problems than they fix.

The adapters made for the helmet type distributors are notorious for warping under heat load. Most folks learn the hard way on those things then switch back to stock to get away from the problems associated with those adapters. Skip modernizes the old style coils to a level of reliability that they never had when new.

I had one of those adaptors on the 33 when we first got it, you only had to wash the tail light and it wouldn’t start, now it has a Skip’s coil and it goes every were.

Um, find another source for advice? Lawrie made a good and funny comment.

When I see them, that plate, wire, and tin-can coil all signal to me that someone is not trying to be as original as possible.

They probably work okay. The reason coils fail is age more so then heat. Heat certainly makes the degeneration more apparent. Heat is part of age if you use it, (it generates and is effected more from internal heat, then external motor heat). A rewound coil will last you most likely the rest of your life. Less you are 20. Then buy two. Just my opinion.


If you are sticking with the points and old coil. Skip really is the way to go. Get one or two before you can't, in my thinking.

Thank you for your feedback. I have not finished rebuilding the engine yet so all parts will be new. I will reach out to Skip and get one of his. I prefer to stay original .
